Aldi to open Stepney Green and Willesden stores in November

Published at 12:11pm

Londoners will soon have two new Aldi supermarkets to shop at, with the budget grocer confirming stores in Stepney Green and Willesden will open their doors this November.

The Stepney Green store in east London opens first, on 19 November, followed a week later by Willesden in north-west London on 26 November. Together they form the capital’s share of a seven-store November opening programme across England.

The other five stores opening next month are in Basildon in Essex, Newport on the Isle of Wight, Matlock in Derbyshire, Orrell in Wigan, and Waterlooville in Hampshire.

Jonathan Neale, Aldi UK’s managing director of national real estate, said demand for new stores remained strong. “Demand for new Aldi stores remains strong, and we want more shoppers to be able to enjoy our high-quality products at low prices,” he said.

“Opening seven stores in November is another big step in our growth plans,” he added. “It will create hundreds of local jobs and bring Aldi’s value to thousands more shoppers across the country.”

Each of the November openings forms part of the company’s ongoing £370 million investment in its UK estate this year. The grocer also says it is planning further store investment, continued price cuts and more long-term agreements with British suppliers.

November openings, not the 2027 pipeline

The two London dates are separate from the longer-term expansion Aldi announced earlier this month. As we reported on 8 October, the chain has named Angel, Clapham and Kew as the locations for three new London supermarkets opening in 2027, the first sites confirmed in a 40-strong wave backed by a £900 million investment programme.

November’s Stepney Green and Willesden openings, by contrast, are happening now — within weeks, rather than next year. They sit in the final-months push that Aldi has said will see 30 new stores open before the end of 2026 alone.

That distinction matters for shoppers in the two neighbourhoods. While the Angel, Clapham and Kew stores are still at the pipeline stage, with exact addresses and opening dates yet to be confirmed, Stepney Green and Willesden have firm dates: 19 and 26 November respectively.

What the openings mean for shoppers

For Stepney Green, in the east of the capital, and Willesden, in the north-west, the new stores add another discount option to the weekly shop. Aldi says the November programme will create hundreds of jobs across the seven locations, though it has not broken down how many roles each individual store will offer.

The openings also land in a busy period for grocery expansion in London. Waitrose has signed a deal for a new Chalk Farm convenience store, while Cricklewood’s Waitrose finally has an opening date — a sign that, at both the discount and premium ends of the market, the battle for new London sites is running hot.

Aldi’s November programme is not confined to the capital. The five stores outside London — Basildon, Newport, Matlock, Orrell and Waterlooville — spread the openings from Essex and Hampshire to Derbyshire, Wigan and the Isle of Wight, underlining that the grocer’s growth push is national as well as London-focused.

Aldi’s wider London push

The November openings come as Aldi continues a rapid expansion across the capital and the country. As we reported earlier this month, the grocer currently trades from 1,095 stores across the UK and has set a long-term ambition of reaching 1,500. Its 2027 programme, the company has said, will prioritise communities where shoppers have limited access to affordable groceries because of thin local choice or weak competition.

Against that backdrop, the Stepney Green and Willesden stores are the near-term proof of the strategy: two concrete November dates, rather than pipeline promises, in two corners of London where the discounter is still building its presence.

With the two London stores opening a week apart, shoppers in Stepney Green will get first look on 19 November, with Willesden following on 26 November.
