Bromley passengers are being urged to check their journeys before travelling this half-term week, as Southeastern services face a series of late-night diversions and replacement buses while engineering work takes place.
The changes centre on the Bromley area, with trains between Bromley North and Grove Park affected and services through Beckenham Junction and Hayes altered towards the end of the week. Most of the disruption falls late at night, from around 11.20pm until the end of service, when fewer passengers are travelling but anyone heading home late could still be caught out.
For Bromley passengers, the key change is on the Bromley North branch. From 11.45pm until the end of service, trains between Bromley North and Grove Park will not run. Passengers can use London bus routes 126 and 261 between the two stations at no extra cost.
The Bromley North line is a short branch off the main line at Grove Park, so when engineering work closes it late at night the bus routes provide the direct substitute. Routes 126 and 261 both serve the corridor between Grove Park and Bromley North, which is why they are the accepted alternative.
Hayes and Beckenham Junction changes
Services to and from Hayes are also affected. From 11.20pm until the end of service, trains between London Charing Cross and Hayes will be diverted after New Beckenham to run to Bromley South instead.
Accessible replacement buses will run from Bromley South to Hayes, calling at Beckenham Junction and all stations from Clock House to Hayes. That keeps the Hayes branch served even while through trains are diverted, although journeys will take longer and passengers should allow extra time.
There is a further late-night change on the route through Beckenham Junction. The 12.27am service from London Victoria to Orpington via Beckenham Junction will be diverted to call additionally at Denmark Hill, and will not call at stations between London Victoria and Shortlands.
Replacement buses will run between London Victoria and Orpington via Beckenham Junction, calling at all stations except Brixton. Passengers travelling to or from Brixton can use London Underground services at no extra cost.
Wider late-night changes across the network
The same late-night engineering work affects several other Southeastern routes, which matters for Bromley passengers travelling further afield or returning from Kent late at night.
From 11.20pm until the end of service, buses will replace trains between Maidstone East and Ashford International, and between Sittingbourne and Sheerness-on-Sea. From 11.45pm, buses will also replace trains between Gillingham and Faversham or Herne Bay.
The 11.20pm and 11.50pm services from London St Pancras International to Faversham will be replaced by buses between Ebbsfleet International, Gillingham and Faversham, with the buses calling at all stations except Higham, Newington and Teynham.
The 11.07pm service from London St Pancras International to Ramsgate via Dover Priory will take an alternative route between Dover Priory and Ramsgate, with replacement buses running between Dover Priory and Ramsgate and calling at all stations.
Half-term week is a busy time for family travel, and late-night engineering work can be easy to miss because daytime services run normally. The message for anyone travelling in the Bromley area this week is simple: check before you travel, particularly for journeys after 11pm, and be ready for a bus or a diverted route on the last services of the night.
Passengers affected by the changes should check their journey before setting out, as late-night timetables differ from the daytime pattern and replacement buses add to journey times. Rail passengers can also find disruption elsewhere on the network this week, including the continuing c2c disruption after the Barking derailment, and lanes closed at the Dartford Tunnel. Longer-term, Elizabeth line passengers face a 10-day closure over Christmas for engineering work at Forest Gate.
