Vauxhall Bridge Road stabbing: man in 40s attacked outside Victoria theatre; woman, 39, arrested

Published at 9:27am

Police have moved to reassure Londoners that there is no wider risk to the public after a man was stabbed on Vauxhall Bridge Road in Victoria in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The victim, a man in his 40s, was found with stab wounds at around 3.10am on 6 October, a short distance from the Apollo Victoria Theatre. He was rushed to hospital as a priority.

The Metropolitan Police initially said the man had suffered potentially life-changing injuries, but detectives have since confirmed his injuries are not believed to be either life-changing or life-threatening.

It is the latest serious violent incident in the capital in recent weeks — a man has separately been charged with murder after another man died following an assault at Liverpool Street Tube station.

Woman arrested on suspicion of attempted murder

A 39-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder a few hours after the attack. She remains in police custody while detectives continue their enquiries.

Officers have stressed they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the stabbing.

“No risk identified to the wider public”

Sergeant Ronald Henderson said: “Whilst there is no risk identified to the wider public, nor are we seeking anyone else in connection with this incident, we understand that the community may be concerned by such an assault.”

He added: “Ward team officers for Vincent Square & Pimlico North have been conducting reassurance patrols in the area throughout the afternoon, and will continue to do so this evening and over the coming days.”

Ward teams are the Met’s dedicated neighbourhood officers for the area, and anyone living or working nearby who feels uneasy after the attack can approach them while the extra patrols continue.

British Transport Police have also released CCTV images following a serious assault at Liverpool Street station, as officers continue to appeal for witnesses after violent attacks across the capital.

Cordon between HSBC and the theatre

A police cordon was put in place on Vauxhall Bridge Road between the HSBC branch and the Apollo Victoria Theatre — currently home to the long-running musical Wicked — as officers examined the scene on Tuesday morning.

Vauxhall Bridge Road is one of the main routes into Victoria, sitting a short walk from the railway, Tube and coach stations that funnel huge numbers of commuters through the area every day. At 3.10am, though, the usually bustling street would have been far quieter than during the daytime, when its pavements are packed with office workers, shoppers and theatregoers.

How to help the investigation

Anyone with information about the stabbing is asked to call police on 101, quoting reference CAD745/06OCT. Information can also be passed anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Officers regularly issue witness appeals after violent incidents in London — detectives recently asked for help after a man was punched in the face at Hackney Downs station.

The investigation remains ongoing, and detectives are continuing to piece together exactly what happened in the moments before the man was found injured. Police have thanked members of the public who have already come forward, and urged anyone who was in the area around the time of the attack — including taxi drivers, night-bus passengers and late-night workers — to check any dashcam or mobile phone footage that might help.
