A man has been left with serious injuries after a Crouch End fight involving a large group of people on Monday evening, in an outbreak of violence police have described as an isolated incident.
Officers were called to the north London neighbourhood at around 8pm on 5 October after receiving reports of an assault. Police attended the scene alongside paramedics from the London Ambulance Service, where two men were found injured.
One of the men had sustained serious injuries and remains in hospital. The injuries of the second man are not believed to be life-threatening. Three men have been arrested in connection with the incident and remain in police custody while enquiries continue.
The condition of the seriously injured man has not been described beyond the police assessment that his injuries are serious. No further details about either of the casualties have been released.
“Isolated incident”, say police
The Metropolitan Police has said officers believe the Crouch End fight was an “isolated incident” and that they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the matter at this stage.
Inspector Alan Smith said: “We understand incidents of this nature can cause concern within the community.”
“Local neighbourhood officers will continue to provide reassurance patrols in the area and work closely with residents and partners.”
What happened on Monday evening
The alarm was raised at around 8pm on Monday, when officers received reports of an assault in Crouch End. A number of people are reported to have been involved in the altercation, which broke out in a busy part of the neighbourhood during the evening.
Police and paramedics attended, and the two injured men were treated at the scene before being taken to hospital. One remains there with serious injuries.
Three men were arrested in connection with the fight and taken into custody, where they remain as detectives work to establish the full circumstances of what happened.
A busy high street at the heart of Haringey
Crouch End, in the London Borough of Haringey, is centred on The Broadway — a lively high street of pubs, restaurants, cafes and independent shops. On a Monday evening the area is usually busy with commuters heading home and diners filling the pavements, making a large-scale brawl of this kind highly unusual for the neighbourhood.
The district, a short bus ride from Finsbury Park and Hornsey, has long been regarded as one of north London’s more relaxed enclaves — a reputation that makes Monday’s violence all the more shocking for local residents.
It is the latest violent incident in the capital to require a major police response. It follows a stabbing on Vauxhall Bridge Road in which a man in his 40s was attacked, and comes as officers continue to appeal for information over a serious assault at Liverpool Street station and a CCTV appeal after a man was punched in the face at Hackney Downs station.
Police appeal for witnesses
Detectives are urging anyone who saw the fight, or who was in the area with a mobile phone or dashcam at the time, to come forward. Witnesses should call police on 101, quoting reference CAD 6762/06OCT26.
A CAD number — short for computer-aided despatch — is the unique reference given to every incident logged in a police control room. Quoting it when calling 101 ensures new information is matched to the right investigation straight away.
Anyone who would rather not give their name can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. Information passed to Crimestoppers is never traced back, and there is no obligation to make a formal statement to police.
Neighbourhood officers will continue reassurance patrols around Crouch End in the coming days as the investigation continues. Anyone with concerns is encouraged to speak to officers on patrol or contact the local neighbourhood policing team.
