British Transport Police have released CCTV images of two men they want to speak to after a man was seriously injured in an assault at Liverpool Street station in central London.
The injured man was found at one of the station entrances shortly after 3.30pm on Saturday 19 September, after officers and paramedics were called to the scene. He had suffered a broken collarbone, a deep cut to his head and had lost two teeth.
He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, where the head wound required staples. Detectives say those involved in the assault had already left the station by the time officers arrived. No arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Liverpool Street is one of London’s busiest rail termini, serving the City of London as well as Underground lines, and its entrances and concourses are typically busy throughout the afternoon, including at weekends. That timing and location are central to this appeal. Officers believe other passengers and station users may have seen what happened, or may have noticed the men pictured in the CCTV images in or around the station that afternoon, even if they did not realise at the time that an assault had taken place.
The appeal
British Transport Police have issued the CCTV images as part of their enquiries and say the two men pictured may be able to assist officers with the investigation. Publishing the images is a request for the public’s help to identify the men, not a finding about what happened.
The assault remains under investigation. No one should be described as responsible for it unless and until police or the courts establish otherwise through the proper process.
Anyone who recognises either man is asked to contact British Transport Police directly. You can text 61016 or call 0800 40 50 40. When you get in touch, quote reference 456 of 19 September so your information reaches the right enquiry.
If you would prefer not to speak to police directly, information can also be given anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
What police are asking witnesses to do
Police are not only asking people who know the men to come forward. They also want to hear from anyone who was at Liverpool Street that Saturday afternoon and saw the incident itself, or who noticed anything unusual around one of the station entrances at around 3.30pm.
Even a brief recollection can help. If you were passing through the station, meeting someone, changing trains or leaving via one of the entrances at that time, you may have seen something relevant without realising its importance at the time.
When you contact police, include the appeal reference at the start of your message or call: reference 456 of 19 September. Say clearly how you know the information, when and where you saw the men or the incident, and how officers can contact you again if you are happy to be contacted. If you are sending information by text, keep it concise and factual, and do not put yourself at risk to obtain further details.
A separate incident
It is important to be clear that this is a separate case. This appeal should not be confused with the death of Thomas Jewitt, 32, who died in hospital on 1 September after a separate serious assault on the Central line platform at Liverpool Street on 30 August. The two have been reported as distinct incidents, on different dates, and information for this appeal should use reference 456 of 19 September.
Anyone with information is urged to contact British Transport Police by texting 61016 or calling 0800 40 50 40, quoting reference 456 of 19 September, or to contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
