Drivers using the A2 this week are being warned of overnight roadworks that will close sections of the route on four consecutive nights.
According to National Highways, 12 closures are planned between Monday, 19 October and Thursday, 22 October, affecting both eastbound and westbound traffic on stretches near Cobham, Whitfield and the A256 in Kent — a key corridor for south-east London drivers heading to and from the capital.
Some restrictions begin as early as 8pm, with others starting at 9pm and running until the following morning. Motorists are advised to plan ahead and allow extra time for journeys.
The closures — repeated each night
The same three closures are scheduled on each of the four nights:
- A2 eastbound, Cobham exit slip road: closed from 8pm until 6am
- A2 westbound, A256 to Whitfield: carriageway closure from 9pm until 5am
- A2 eastbound, Whitfield Roundabout to A256: carriageway closure from 9pm until 5am
The Cobham exit slip closure starts earliest at 8pm and runs latest, until 6am, so drivers using that junction should plan for the full overnight window. The Whitfield-area carriageway closures run 9pm to 5am in both directions.
Night by night
Monday night into Tuesday (19–20 October): three closures as listed above.
Tuesday night into Wednesday (20–21 October): three closures as listed above.
Wednesday night into Thursday (21–22 October): three closures as listed above.
Thursday night into Friday (22–23 October): three closures as listed above.
Plan ahead
National Highways regularly carries out maintenance and improvement works across England’s major roads and motorways. Drivers should be aware that planned roadworks can change or be cancelled at short notice.
The A2 is one of the main routes linking London with north Kent, carrying commuter traffic to and from the capital as well as freight heading for the Channel ports. The affected stretches around Cobham and Whitfield sit on the Dover-bound corridor, so lorry drivers and late-night travellers should be particularly alert to the closures.
Those travelling along the A2, particularly during the evening and overnight, are advised to check their routes before setting off. Signed diversion routes will be in place at each closure, and motorists can find the latest information on closures, roadworks and traffic incidents through the National Highways website.
If you are caught in queues approaching a closure, keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front and stay alert for sudden braking. Never use a handheld mobile phone while driving, even in slow-moving traffic.
The A2 works come in the same week as 31 overnight closures on the M25 — drivers planning late journeys should check both routes. For more on today’s disruption, see our live coverage of the A13 crash at Newham Way.
