Plan ahead
National Highways carries out regular maintenance and improvement works across England’s motorway network, and drivers should be aware that planned closures can change or be cancelled at short notice — particularly because of weather conditions or operational requirements.
The M25 is the busiest motorway in the UK, carrying around 200,000 vehicles a day on its busiest sections. Even overnight, when traffic is lighter, the closures are likely to affect freight drivers, shift workers, airport passengers heading for early flights, and anyone travelling to or from London’s outer boroughs.
Motorists can check the latest information, including roadworks and traffic incidents, through the National Highways website. Drivers are advised to follow signed diversion routes where closures are in place and allow additional time for their journeys.
