Finchley Road’s Bonoo ranked among the world’s best hidden-gem restaurants

Published at 6:03pm

A Finchley Road restaurant has been named among the finest hidden gems on the planet, earning north London a coveted place on a prestigious global dining list. Bonoo, an Indian tapas restaurant on Finchley Road, features in the hidden gem category of Tripadvisor’s Travellers’ Choice Restaurants 2026 awards — the only restaurant in Britain to do so.

The north London venue keeps illustrious company on the list, appearing alongside restaurants in Peru, Greece, Turkey, Japan, Brazil, Vietnam and Portugal. Bonoo secured its place after building an average rating of 4.9 out of five across 3,981 reviews.

Tripadvisor’s Best of the Best awards honour restaurants that receive a high volume of exceptional reviews and opinions from its community over a 12-month period. Fewer than one per cent of the site’s eight million listings around the world reach the required standard. The review platform says winners earn their status through outstanding food and local charm — even if diners have to stray off the beaten path to find them.

The hidden gem category celebrates restaurants that fly under the radar yet win devoted followings through quality and character. With thousands of five-star reviews behind it, Bonoo is a textbook example: a neighbourhood restaurant whose reputation has been built almost entirely on word of mouth.

Bonoo’s offering centres on upmarket Indian street food with a healthy twist. The menu is built around tapas-style sharing plates that celebrate seasonal ingredients, taking in Indian chaats, biryanis, classic curries, kathi rolls and grilled dishes from the tandoor. Vegetarians are particularly well catered for, with an extensive meat-free selection.

Recent diners have praised the restaurant’s speedy service, excellent cooking and warm welcome. One reviewer described it as “a north London gem” and promised to return, while others singled out the quality of the food and the friendliness of the staff.

The restaurant can be found at 675 Finchley Road, London NW2. Bonoo also runs a second site at 4–5 Fortis Green in Muswell Hill. More details are available at bonoo.co.uk.

A boost for London’s Indian food scene

London’s love affair with Indian food is one of the capital’s great culinary stories. The curry houses of Brick Lane introduced generations to the cuisine, but in recent years a wave of regional Indian kitchens, tapas-style small plates and health-conscious menus has redefined what a night out for a curry can look like. Recognition is following the innovation: four restaurants across Sutton and Croydon have been shortlisted for the Asian Restaurant and Takeaway Awards, the industry’s so-called “Curry Oscars”. Bonoo’s global honour shows diners are looking beyond the usual central London hotspots — and it is quite the season for London restaurant openings, with big names continuing to bet on the capital. Independent venues have long been the lifeblood of the capital’s dining culture, and global recognition gives neighbourhood favourites a rare moment in the international spotlight. For north London, which has quietly built one of the city’s most exciting independent food scenes, the award puts Finchley Road firmly on the map.

Planning a visit

If the award has whetted your appetite, it is worth booking ahead — restaurants that land global recognition rarely stay quiet for long. The tapas format makes Bonoo ideal for sharing, so round up a group and order across the menu: the chaats and kathi rolls are a natural starting point, while the tandoor grills and biryanis show the kitchen at its best. Vegetarians will find plenty to choose from. The Finchley Road site sits a short walk from Finchley Road station, served by the Jubilee and Metropolitan lines, with regular buses running along Finchley Road itself. Those based further north may prefer the Muswell Hill branch — and you could easily make an evening of it, with Kilburn’s rowdiest rom-com playing a short bus ride away.
