Two people have been taken to hospital after a Brighton Road crash in Purley in the early hours of this morning, Sunday 11 October 2026.

The London Ambulance Service said it was called at 4.08am to reports of a collision on Brighton Road.

Two ambulance crews, a paramedic in a fast response car and an incident response officer were dispatched to the scene. A trauma team from the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance was also dispatched, travelling to Purley by car.

Paramedics treated two patients at the scene. One was taken to a major trauma centre, while the other was taken to a local hospital. The conditions of both patients are not currently known.

A police cordon was put in place and Brighton Road was closed while emergency services dealt with the incident. Traffic in the area is now said to be coping well.

Road closed in early hours

Brighton Road is one of the main routes through Purley, a town in the south London borough of Croydon. It forms part of the A23 corridor, the key north–south route linking the capital with Gatwick Airport and the Sussex coast, and any closure can cause significant disruption for drivers.

The road runs through the heart of Purley, passing shops, businesses and Purley station, and is normally busy with commuters and shoppers during the day.

The closure came in the early hours of a Sunday morning, when traffic levels are typically at their lowest, which is likely to have limited the knock-on impact on other road users. Police maintained a cordon around the scene while ambulance crews treated the patients.

Motorists travelling through Purley this morning are advised to check their route before setting off and to allow extra time for any diversions around the closure. Bus passengers should also check for updates, as services using Brighton Road may be affected.

Major trauma response

The decision to send the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance trauma team underlines the seriousness with which the incident was treated. The charity’s clinicians attend some of the most seriously injured patients across the region, responding by helicopter during the day and by rapid response car at night or when weather conditions prevent flying.

One of the patients was taken to a major trauma centre — a specialist hospital equipped to treat the most severely injured casualties around the clock, with surgeons, anaesthetists and scanning facilities on site. The second patient was taken to a local hospital. No further details about their injuries have been released.

It is not the first serious road crash in the capital to result in hospitalisations in recent weeks — three people were taken to hospital after a crash at Kew Bridge earlier this month.

Investigation under way

Police have not yet said what caused the crash. Investigations into serious collisions often require roads to be closed for several hours while officers carry out a detailed examination of the scene, and cordons are usually lifted once that work is complete.

Police regularly appeal for witnesses and dashcam footage after serious crashes in the capital — a man was charged after a fatal collision in Southall as officers appealed for information.

Anyone who was in the area at the time of the Purley crash and saw what happened is asked to contact the Metropolitan Police.
