A 17-year-old boy has died after a single-car collision in Southall, and a 20-year-old man has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving. Sukhveer Singh, of Townsend Road, Southall, appeared at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 21 September, and was remanded in custody ahead of a hearing at the Old Bailey on 19 October.
The collision happened on South Road, Southall, at around 1.04am on Saturday, 19 September. Police were called to reports of a crash involving one car, a Ford Mustang. Officers attended alongside the London Ambulance Service and the London Fire Brigade.
Despite the best efforts of paramedics, a passenger in the car — Ranbir Singh, aged 17 — was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed and continue to be supported by specialist officers, the Met said. Another passenger, a man aged 26, suffered serious injuries and remains in hospital, with police awaiting an update on his condition.
Officers arrested the driver of the car, aged 20, at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent. He was charged on Sunday, 20 September, with causing death by dangerous driving, aggravated vehicle taking and dangerous driving, driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence, and using a vehicle without insurance.
The Old Bailey hears the most serious criminal cases in London, and causing death by dangerous driving is among the gravest motoring offences under UK law. It follows other recent prosecutions in the capital over fatal road incidents. Other motoring offences in London have also resulted in jail terms, including a recent case in which a former Met officer was jailed over a ‘crash for cash’ insurance fraud.
Detective Inspector Fiaz Janjua, of the Met’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, described the incident as “truly tragic”. He said: “Our deepest sympathies remain with Ranbir’s family and friends, who continue to be supported by specially trained officers during this extremely difficult time.”
“While a man has now been charged in connection with this collision, our investigation remains ongoing and we are continuing to establish the full circumstances leading up to the incident,” he added.
The force is appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision, the manner of driving beforehand, or the movements of the Ford Mustang in the Southall area during the early hours of Saturday, 19 September, to come forward. Officers are particularly keen to hear from anyone with CCTV, doorbell, mobile phone or dashcam footage that could assist their enquiries.
Public witness appeals are a regular part of major police investigations in the capital — the Met recently renewed an appeal two years on from another serious case in London.
