This is a developing story — details are still emerging and the road remains closed. Follow the live updates below.
A main road in Northumberland Park, Tottenham has been shut in both directions after a crash this morning, with drivers told to avoid the area as emergency services deal with the incident.
The collision on Northumberland Park, between the A1010 High Road and Sainsbury’s, was first reported at around 9.24am on Friday. The road was described as blocked both ways, and the closure is expected to last for over three hours.
Motoring organisation the AA said: “Road blocked and slow traffic due to accident on Northumberland Park both ways between A1010 High Road and Sainsbury’s. Congestion to either side on the High Road, near White Hart Lane. Diversion in operation – for bus W3.”
Access to the Sainsbury’s store has also been blocked as a result of the closure, adding to the disruption for shoppers and residents in the area.
Northumberland Park sits in the heart of Tottenham in the borough of Haringey, linking the A1010 High Road with the area towards Tottenham Hale. It is a busy stretch used by local traffic, buses and delivery vehicles, and the closure has pushed queues back onto the High Road on either side of the junction.
Emergency services are on the scene. What caused the crash, how many vehicles were involved and whether anyone was hurt have not yet been confirmed. We will update this live blog as soon as more information is available.
Bus routes diverted
A diversion is in operation for the W3 bus, which serves the area, and passengers are being warned to expect delays. Anyone travelling through Tottenham this morning is advised to plan an alternative route and allow extra time.
Northumberland Park station and Tottenham Hale station both sit close to the closed stretch of road. Rail services are not affected — this is a road closure only.
Today’s incident is the latest in a string of road closures across the capital. Earlier this week, an emergency incident shut the A10 in both directions at Stamford Hill, while Brighton Road in Purley was closed after a crash.
The Tottenham area has also seen serious collisions on the High Road before, including a crash that left a man needing treatment at a major trauma centre and an e-cyclist hit by a bus.
