Bromley passengers face weekend of buses instead of trains as engineering work bites
Passengers travelling to and from Bromley this weekend are being urged to check before they travel, with engineering work forcing a string of changes on Southeastern services — and a second named storm, Storm Boelo, heading for the capital just as crews get to work.
The engineering programme is concentrated in south-east London and north Kent, and it hits hardest on Sunday, October 25, when the usual train services give way to replacement buses on key stretches.
What is changing this weekend
On Saturday, October 24, replacement buses will run between Bromley South and Orpington in place of trains.
On Sunday, the disruption spreads. Engineering work will affect services between Beckenham Junction and Orpington, with buses replacing trains for the whole day. Trains between London Victoria and Ramsgate, Dover Priory and Ashford International via Maidstone East will be diverted and will not stop at Bromley South at all on Sunday.
Passengers travelling to or from Bromley South can use their tickets at no extra cost on Thameslink replacement buses between Bromley South and Swanley, where they can connect with the diverted trains. Additional trains will also run between Grove Park and Bromley North on Sunday, calling at Sundridge Park.
Separately, engineering work between Greenwich and Woolwich Arsenal will close all lines throughout Sunday — another stretch of the network to steer clear of.
Why the timing is awkward
The works land on a weekend when the weather is already turning. Storm Austen brought strong winds and heavy rain across the south on Friday, and now the Storm Austen live updates give way to warnings for its successor.
Storm Boelo has been named, and the Met Office expects the strongest winds from Saturday evening, extending eastwards through Sunday — right across the weekend when the engineering closures are in force. The Met Office warns of flying debris, possible power cuts, damage to trees and buildings, and longer journey times with cancellations likely across road, rail, air and ferry services.
A yellow warning for wind is in force into tomorrow, valid until 21:00. For rail passengers, that means any service that does run could be slowed or suspended at short notice — so the advice is to check journey planners before setting out, and again on the day.
How to get around Bromley this weekend
If you are travelling to or from Bromley South on Saturday, the replacement bus between Bromley South and Orpington is the fallback. On Sunday, the Thameslink replacement buses between Bromley South and Swanley connect with diverted trains — and your existing ticket will be accepted, so you do not need to buy a new one.
For local journeys, the extra Grove Park to Bromley North trains via Sundridge Park give another option, though services will still be reduced compared with a normal weekend.
The engineering work follows a week in which the capital’s transport network has barely had a quiet day. On Friday, severe delays hit the Tube and rail network during the evening rush hour, and a fallen tree at Ladywell brought Southeastern services to a standstill earlier in the day. Passengers have also been warned of major disruption on the Stansted Express route after a tree blocked the line.
What to do if your journey is disrupted
If your train is cancelled or severely delayed, you are entitled to a refund of the full cost of the ticket if you choose not to travel, or compensation under Delay Repay — generally 50 per cent of the ticket price for delays between 30 and 60 minutes and 100 per cent for delays of an hour or more. Claims can be made through Southeastern’s website, and it is worth keeping your ticket or booking confirmation.
Passengers should also expect the unexpected on Sunday: with engineering work closing lines and Storm Boelo’s winds forecast through the day, timetables may change at short notice. The National Rail enquiries website and Southeastern’s own service updates remain the most reliable source of what is running on the day.
