Jubilee line closure to hit O2 journeys this weekend

Published at 3:37pm

Anyone travelling to the O2 this weekend will need to rethink their route, with the Jubilee line shutting a key stretch of the Underground through central and east London.

The line will be closed between Green Park and Canary Wharf during the daytime on Saturday and Sunday, while engineers carry out track work, Transport for London (TfL) has said.

The shutdown lands squarely on the main Tube route to North Greenwich, the station that serves the O2 arena in Greenwich — so gig-goers and event crowds coming from central London face a longer and more complicated journey.

For anyone bound for the venue, TfL advises taking the Central or Elizabeth line as far as Stratford, or the District or Hammersmith & City lines to West Ham, then changing onto Jubilee line trains to North Greenwich from either station. Rail replacement buses will also be running, calling at North Greenwich, Canning Town and Stratford.

Elsewhere on the closed section, passengers can use other Tube lines, the Windrush line, the Elizabeth line, the DLR or local bus routes to get around. One wrinkle: Windrush line trains will not call at Canada Water, so travellers are being told to use Surrey Quays instead, a short walk away.

The disruption does not stop when the daytime works end. Night Tube services between Finchley Road and Stratford are also affected by the engineering work — something to bear in mind if you are heading home late after an evening at the O2.

Waterloo is caught up in the overnight works too. Jubilee line trains will not stop at the station between 2.45am and 4.15am during the Friday Night Tube. TfL suggests leaving the Northern line at Embankment and walking across the Golden Jubilee Bridges, or staying on to Kennington and catching the N155 bus from stop KB to Lower Marsh, a short walk from Waterloo.

Victoria line also disrupted on Saturday night

It is not just the Jubilee line facing closures. The Victoria line will have no service between Victoria and Brixton from 7.30pm on Saturday until 10am on Sunday, with a reduced service running on the rest of the line.

TfL says the shutdown is needed for essential track crossing repairs. A speed restriction in the Brixton area will also cause some delays until the work is finished, with a normal service expected by midday on Sunday.

Getting to the O2: plan before you travel

If you are heading to the arena this weekend, leave more time than usual and check live departure information before setting off — engineering work can overrun, and replacement bus queues build quickly when big events finish. TfL’s live Tube status page and the TfL Go app will show whether the closures are still in place, and station staff at Stratford and West Ham can point you to the quickest interchange when you arrive.

It is also worth planning the journey home in advance. With Night Tube services between Finchley Road and Stratford disrupted, late-night options will be thinner than usual, so check last trains and bus alternatives before the show starts rather than at midnight.

The O2 has had a packed run of big nights recently, from the Laver Cup tennis showpiece to David Guetta’s biggest London show, which sold out within hours of tickets going on sale. With more crowds expected this weekend, the message is simple: do not count on the direct Jubilee line run from central London. And if you are travelling by road instead, it is worth checking the planned road closures and bus diversions already in place around the capital’s busy events calendar.

How to check live Tube status

Before you leave, check TfL’s status updates page for the latest on the Jubilee and Victoria lines, or use the TfL Go app for live departures. Planned engineering works are also listed on TfL’s website. Once you are out, departure boards and station announcements will confirm whether replacement buses are running from North Greenwich, Canning Town and Stratford.
