Shopkeepers call Hertford Road “dangerous” after fatal Enfield pub shooting

Published at 6:39pm

Shopkeepers have described Hertford Road in Enfield as “dangerous” after a 35-year-old man was shot dead outside The Sun and Woolpack pub.

Workers at nearby shops said they heard sirens late on Monday night, following reports of the shooting at about 9.30pm. Officers attended with the London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance. The man was treated for gunshot wounds but was pronounced dead at the scene. His family has been informed and is being supported by specialist officers.

One worker described the road as dangerous, saying it was affected by altercations and shoplifting. An employee at another business said fights were common in the surrounding area and that police were often present.

The comments paint a picture of a road where traders say trouble has been building — and where Monday night’s fatal shooting, while shocking in its severity, did not come entirely out of the blue.

Police closed Hertford Road following the shooting, with the road still shut at the time of publication.

The shooting is the latest development in the murder investigation. Earlier we reported the Met’s CCTV appeal, in which detectives released an image of a person in a bright orange wig they want to speak to. Enfield North MP Feryal Clark has condemned the “devastating” killing, and the pub chain has pledged full support for the investigation.

A spokesperson for The Sun and Woolpack said: “We are fully supporting the Metropolitan Police with their ongoing investigations following the terrible incident that happened on Monday night. We are supporting our franchisee and their team and our thoughts are with everyone impacted by this tragic event.”

No arrests have been made and enquiries remain ongoing. Anyone with information should call police on 101, quoting CAD 7050/19OCT26, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
