Met to interview Jeffrey Donaldson over alleged 2016 Westminster rape

Published at 3:53pm

Former DUP leader Jeffrey Donaldson is to be interviewed by Metropolitan Police detectives following an allegation that he raped a woman at the Houses of Parliament in 2016, according to BBC Spotlight.

The BBC reports that PSNI officers have spoken to the woman and passed her account to police in London, where the incident is alleged to have happened.

The Metropolitan Police has confirmed it received a referral from the PSNI on 13 October concerning an allegation of rape in 2016 involving a man now aged 63. Its statement did not identify Donaldson.

Early stage investigation

Police said specialist officers are supporting the woman. The investigation remains at an early stage, with enquiries continuing and no arrests made in connection with this allegation.

In a separate case, Donaldson was sentenced on 15 October to 15 years in prison for sexual offences against two children between 1985 and 2008. He was convicted in June of rape, indecent assault and gross indecency. He denied those charges and is seeking to appeal his convictions.

The London investigation concerns a separate allegation from the offences for which he has already been sentenced. The reported allegation has not been proven in court.
