Motorcyclist, 28, killed in early-morning A406 crash at Chingford

Published at 12:55pm

A 28-year-old motorcyclist has died following an early-morning crash on the A406 North Circular in Chingford, prompting the closure of a busy stretch of the ring road in both directions.

The collision happened earlier this morning near South Chingford, in the London Borough of Waltham Forest. The rider, aged 28, lost his life in the crash. Emergency services attended the scene in the early hours, and the road has been shut since, with updates through the morning reporting queues continuing to build on all approaches.

The A406 is closed between Chingford Road and Hall Lane while officers investigate and clear-up work takes place. Drivers have been warned of serious delays on the approaches in both directions, with congestion spilling onto surrounding local roads around South Chingford and Walthamstow as motorists look for alternative routes.

Motorists heading towards the North Circular in east London are urged to avoid the area if they can, allow significantly more time for their journeys and check live traffic information before setting off. Anyone whose journey is not essential is advised to consider delaying it until the road has reopened.

Where exactly the road is shut

The closed section sits in the London Borough of Waltham Forest between Chingford Road and Hall Lane, near South Chingford — a busy commuter corridor linking the Lea Valley with the eastern suburbs. The A406, better known as the North Circular, is one of London’s busiest ring roads, carrying traffic around the inner city from Chiswick in the west to Woolwich in the east. It is a key route for commuters, freight and longer-distance traffic alike, and when it shuts the effects are felt well beyond the closure itself as traffic diverts onto local roads never designed to take the strain. Closures here quickly send traffic backing up across the wider road network.

What happens after a fatal crash

When a collision proves fatal, police typically keep the road closed for several hours while specialist collision investigators examine the scene in detail. Officers photograph and measure the carriageway, gather forensic evidence and work to piece together the sequence of events before the road can be handed back to traffic. Forces routinely appeal for witnesses and dashcam footage after fatal crashes to help establish exactly what happened. There is still no indication of when the A406 will reopen, with officers expected to remain at the scene for some time.

Motorcyclists among the most vulnerable

Motorcyclists are among the most vulnerable users of London’s roads, and collisions on fast, multi-lane routes such as the North Circular can have devastating consequences. Road safety campaigners have long urged all drivers to take extra care around motorcyclists, particularly at junctions and in heavy, stop-start traffic.

A morning of major disruption

It is the latest in a series of incidents on the North Circular in recent weeks. Drivers previously faced major queues after a crash at Henlys Corner, while a major road was shut with long delays near the North Circular at Woodheyes Road.

It also comes on a morning of wider disruption on the capital’s roads, with the M25 at a standstill between Swanley and Dartford after a separate crash — follow our live updates.

Public transport alternatives

London bus services that use the North Circular corridor through Waltham Forest may be delayed, diverted or curtailed while the closure remains in place. Passengers are advised to check live bus arrivals before travelling and allow extra time. Depending on the journey, London Overground or Underground services may offer an alternative — check your route before you travel.

We have been covering the closure live throughout the morning. This is a developing story and we will update this article as more details emerge.
