A man has been charged after an alleged stabbing on a residential street in Woolwich at the weekend.

Lee Walker, 24, of Dunkery Road in Mottingham, was charged on Monday 28 September with grievous bodily harm with intent, two counts of possession of a bladed article, possession of cannabis, driving not in accordance with a licence and driving without insurance.

The charges relate to an alleged incident on Herbert Road in Woolwich, south east London, at about 5.45pm on Saturday 26 September. The victim, a man in his 20s, was taken to hospital with injuries described as neither life-threatening nor life-changing.

Walker appeared in custody at Bromley Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday 29 September. He was remanded in custody and is due to appear next at Woolwich Crown Court on Tuesday 27 October.

In a statement, the Metropolitan Police said: “Detectives investigating a stabbing in Herbert Road, Woolwich, at about 17:45hrs on Saturday, 26 September have charged a man.”

What the charges mean

The charge sheet tells its own story about how seriously detectives are treating the case. Grievous bodily harm with intent is one of the most serious violent offences in English law, carrying a maximum sentence of life imprisonment — it alleges not just that serious injury was caused, but that it was intended.

The two separate counts of possession of a bladed article suggest more than one weapon may have been recovered, while the cannabis possession charge adds a drugs element to the case. The two driving offences — driving not in accordance with a licence and driving without insurance — hint that a vehicle played some part in the events of Saturday evening, though police have not given details.

Taken together, the six charges paint a picture of an incident that detectives believe involved planning and mobility, rather than a spontaneous confrontation. The full picture will emerge as the case moves through the courts.

Woolwich in focus

Herbert Road sits in a residential part of Woolwich, south east London — a neighbourhood that has seen its share of serious incidents in recent years. Walker’s address in Mottingham is only a short distance away, in the neighbouring borough.

The case follows a string of recent charging decisions across the capital. In Feltham, two men were charged after a gun was allegedly seized following a police chase, while a man was charged overnight after a Met officer was stabbed during a dawn raid in Cockfosters.

For now, Walker remains in custody ahead of his appearance at Woolwich Crown Court on 27 October, where the case is expected to move towards trial. Enquiries continue.
