Ask a driver to name the worst thing about the M25 and you will hear about the traffic. Ask where to stop for a decent coffee on London’s orbital, though, and the answer is less obvious – because there are only four official places to do it. Now the M25 service stations ranked by thousands of Google reviews have delivered a verdict on all of them, and the gap between the best and the worst is stark.
Cobham sits firmly on top with 4.1 stars from more than 23,000 reviews, while Thurrock props up the table on 3.7. In between come South Mimms and Clacket Lane – and with just four official stops spread across 117 miles of motorway, choosing the right one genuinely matters.

4. Thurrock Services – 3.7 stars
Bottom of the pile. The Moto-operated site sits around junctions 30 and 31 near the A13 and stays open 24 hours, offering the standard motorway mix of food, fuel and toilets. Reviews are mixed: some motorists praise its convenience and range of facilities, while others complain about cleanliness and the tired condition of parts of the site. It also comes last among the four on Motorway Services Online’s own ratings.
3. Clacket Lane Services – 3.8 stars
Roadchef’s stop between junctions 5 and 6 near Westerham is unusual in having entirely separate eastbound and westbound sites – and remarkably, both carry the same 3.8-star rating. The eastbound side is by far the busier in review terms, with more than 6,600 Google reviews against 2,800+ for the westbound. Both are open around the clock.
2. South Mimms Services – 3.9 stars
Welcome Break’s giant at junction 23, where the M25 meets the A1(M), is one of the great crossroads of the British road network – a natural break point for drivers heading around or out of London. Its 13,000+ reviews praise the wide choice of food and drink, clean toilets and EV charging facilities, though some visitors find it more functional than loveable. It misses the top spot by a whisker.
1. Cobham Services – 4.1 stars
The clear winner, and by some distance in review volume. Extra’s flagship between junctions 9 and 10 in Surrey opened in 2012 and does something rare on the motorway network: it serves traffic in both directions from a single site. Drivers love the huge food and drink line-up – McDonald’s, KFC, Starbucks, Costa and plenty more – and the verdict is backed up elsewhere too: Which? named Cobham the best of the M25’s four in its separate 2026 motorway services survey.
Why are there only four?
Four official stops for 117 miles is strikingly sparse for one of Britain’s busiest motorways, which is exactly why the ratings matter – on some stretches you are a long way from the next proper break. The ranking covers the four service areas directly serving the motorway: Cobham (junctions 9-10), Clacket Lane (5-6), South Mimms (23) and Thurrock (30-31).
And here is a quirk worth knowing: the M25 technically becomes the A282 at the Dartford Crossing, so despite what your sat-nav implies, you have never actually driven one uninterrupted lap of the M25 itself.
The cost of the orbital run
A lap of London is not cheap, and the services bill is only part of it. Tolls now apply at the Silvertown and Blackwall tunnels for drivers cutting across the river, the Dartford Crossing carries its own charge, and London’s most-fined roads show how quickly penalties can stack up for the unwary. Picking a decent place to stop may be the least of your expenses – but at least now you know which one the drivers rate.
