Muswell Hill turns out in record numbers to honour the fallen

Muswell Hill turned out in record numbers for its biggest-ever Remembrance parade and service, as the community came together to honour the fallen.

The Royal British Legion Muswell Hill and Highgate Branch held its biggest Remembrance parade and service to date. Traditionally held the week before Remembrance Sunday, to avoid clashing with the official events at the Cenotaph, the event began with the laying of a wreath at the memorial to PC Keith Blakelock on Muswell Hill Broadway.

Then, accompanied by the rousing London Metropolitan Brass, Standards, members, Royal Fusiliers Cadets from 212 Hornsey, OIC Haringey Sea Cadets, London Fire Brigade and Metropolitan Police officers, Lambretta riders from the Ride To Remembrance and members of the public made their way back to the Branch on Muswell Hill Road for a service in its Memorial Garden.

The service was conducted by Father Robert Easton and attended by the Deputy Lieutenant for Haringey, Captain Peter Baker, Branch Patron Sir Andrew Smith, Catherine West MP and local councillors Tony Powell, Karina Braun and Daniela Parry.

With choral accompaniment from North London Voices and prayers from Bibi Khan of Wightman Road Mosque and Judith Prinsley of Muswell Hill Synagogue, it was a morning of remembrance for all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the World Wars and later conflicts, and of thanks to serving personnel, veterans and their families.

Following the service, which attracted the Branch’s biggest attendance to date, everyone was invited into the club for a buffet and refreshments.
