A 25-year-old motorcyclist has been arrested after a police pursuit came to an end in a crash with a van in Thornton Heath this afternoon.
Officers asked the motorcycle to stop on Sydenham Road at around 2.50pm. Shortly afterwards, on Wellesley Road, the bike collided with a van, according to the Metropolitan Police.
The rider was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and aggravated vehicle taking. He remains in police custody, the force said.
The collision forced the closure of Selhurst Road in Thornton Heath, with traffic delays reported between The Crescent and Dagnall Park as emergency crews dealt with the scene.
No details of any injuries have been given by police. London Ambulance Service was not mentioned in the Met’s account of the incident.
The arrest followed what the Met described as a short pursuit. Police say officers requested the rider stop on Sydenham Road, a busy route through the centre of Thornton Heath, before the crash happened moments later on Wellesley Road nearby.
What “aggravated vehicle taking” means
Aggravated vehicle taking is a criminal offence under section 12A of the Theft Act 1968. In plain terms, it means taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent, with certain aggravating features — such as dangerous driving, an accident causing injury or damage to property, or damage to the vehicle itself.
It carries a maximum sentence of two years in prison, rising to five years if the driving causes a death. Being arrested on suspicion of the offence is not a finding of guilt; the investigation is ongoing.
How police pursuits work
Police pursuits are governed by strict national policy. Officers may only pursue a vehicle when the need to stop it is judged to outweigh the risk to the public, and chases are continuously risk-assessed while they are happening.
Where a pursuit ends in a collision, the incident is reviewed internally. Any death or serious injury following police contact must be referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, which decides whether to investigate. No such referral has been reported in this case, and police have given no indication that anyone was seriously hurt.
A separate incident on Selhurst Road
Readers may recall another crash on Selhurst Road in Thornton Heath earlier today, in which a 72-year-old man was seriously hurt. Police say this afternoon’s incident — a police pursuit ending in a collision on Wellesley Road — is a separate matter, and the two are not connected.
Disruption in Thornton Heath
Selhurst Road, a key route through Thornton Heath linking residential streets with the town centre, was shut between The Crescent and Dagnall Park while police worked at the scene. Motorists were warned to expect delays and find alternative routes.
Thornton Heath’s roads were busy this afternoon, with several junctions around Wellesley Road and Sydenham Road affected by the closure. It was the second time today that part of the area’s road network has been closed to traffic.
Croydon Council has received significant transport funding this year for road safety schemes across the borough, including a £1.79m package from Transport for London aimed at making streets safer.
The latest Met data shows Croydon among the boroughs with the highest numbers of recorded violent crime in the capital, according to our analysis of the most recent figures.
The Met continues to appeal for anyone who witnessed the pursuit or the collision on Wellesley Road to come forward. The investigation into the arrest remains ongoing.
