Update: British Transport Police officers were called at around 8.40am to reports of a casualty by the tracks near St Johns railway station. Officers responded with paramedics, but a person was pronounced dead at the scene. Enquiries into the circumstances leading up to the person’s death are ongoing, a BTP spokesperson said.
Update: Some lines have reopened and services have started to run, Southeastern has confirmed. Some services are still being diverted and cancelled.
No trains can run through the area between Hither Green and New Cross after a body was found on the track this morning.
A Southeastern spokesperson said: “Emergency services are on site and working to clear the line.”
Southeastern has warned passengers to expect delays in the Hither Green area, with trains delayed, altered or cancelled at short notice until further notice.
This is a developing story — live updates will appear below as they come in.
Emergency services were first reported to be dealing with an incident next to the railway in the Hither Green area this morning. The line through the area carries Southeastern services, and passengers are advised to check before travelling while the line remains closed.
What is not yet known: the identity of the person, the circumstances leading up to their death, and when the line will fully reopen. None of those details has been confirmed, and this article will be updated when officials provide them.
Passengers facing disruption should check Southeastern’s latest service updates before setting out, as trains may be altered or cancelled at short notice. Other parts of London’s transport network have also seen disruption recently, including a crash that closed the A315 London Road in Hounslow and delays to the 213 bus in Sutton.
