Croydon Council is considering scrapping its in-house adult education service after forecasting a £500,000 overspend.
The council’s cabinet has unanimously approved a 21-day consultation on plans to switch Croydon Adult Learning and Training (CALAT) to a fully subcontracted model.
Under the proposals, colleges, charities and independent training providers would take over CALAT courses.
The council said its in-house service — one of London’s biggest — was no longer financially viable, with achievement rates below the London average.
CALAT has long been a major provider of adult education in south London, offering courses ranging from basic skills to professional qualifications.
The consultation will run for 21 days before a final decision is made on the service’s future.
London Streets has been covering Barking and Dagenham schools and Camden schools today.
