Chessington World of Adventures has closed for the day after the theme park was reportedly evacuated following reports of a threat.
The attraction on Leatherhead Road in Chessington has confirmed it is currently closed, and told guests who had planned to visit that their tickets will be accepted at LEGOLAND Windsor.
A closure notice issued on Sunday (November 8) said: “Chessington World of Adventures Resort is currently closed. Guests due to visit today are advised that tickets are being accepted at LEGOLAND Windsor or alternatively, you can contact our Customer Services team after 2PM today. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and will provide a further update as soon as possible.”
Park evacuated earlier in the day
The closure comes after reports that the theme park had been evacuated earlier in the day. Police officers and sniffer dogs were reportedly seen at Chessington World of Adventures, although the circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear.
Chessington Buzz, a social media account covering the theme park, reported a parkwide evacuation. It said: “We’re aware there is a parkwide evacuation of Chessington currently and, as is often standard, the attendance of emergency services.” The account urged visitors to follow instructions from staff at the park and its hotels, adding: “Let the teams do their jobs.”
The Metropolitan Police has urged people not to speculate about the incident while enquiries are ongoing.
It is not currently clear when Chessington World of Adventures will reopen, with the resort saying a further update will be provided “as soon as possible”. Guests who were due to visit can alternatively contact the resort’s customer services team after 2pm.
The A243 Leatherhead Road outside the park is also closed in both directions after a police incident — follow our live updates here. Full details of the evacuation itself are in our earlier story — read it here.
