Drivers are being warned of long delays around Carshalton Beeches this afternoon after a crash closed Banstead Road in both directions.
The collision was reported just after lunchtime on Friday, 23 October, and the road remains shut in both directions through the Carshalton Beeches area. Staplehurst Road has also been reported closed as police manage the scene.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area and find alternative routes while emergency services deal with the incident. Queues are already building on surrounding roads.

Roads closed
Banstead Road is blocked in both directions through Carshalton Beeches, while Staplehurst Road is also reported to be shut. The closures sit in a residential part of the London Borough of Sutton, between Carshalton and the approaches towards Banstead, and they are already causing knock-on congestion on the roads that feed into the junction.
Details remain limited at this stage. No information has yet been released about any injuries, and emergency services have not issued a public statement describing the circumstances of the crash. London Streets will update this live blog as soon as more is confirmed.
Carshalton Beeches
Carshalton Beeches is a mainly residential area south of central Carshalton, close to the borders of Sutton, Banstead and Wallington. Banstead Road is one of its key thoroughfares, carrying local traffic between Sutton town centre and the Surrey border — so a full closure in both directions at any point in the afternoon tends to push traffic quickly onto smaller residential streets.
Drivers heading between Sutton, Carshalton and Banstead should expect their journeys to take noticeably longer this afternoon and allow extra time. Anyone who normally passes through the area at school-run or early-evening peak should consider leaving earlier, later, or re-routing entirely.
Storm Austen factor
The crash comes on a day when London’s roads are already under pressure. Storm Austen has been battering the capital with heavy rain and strong gusts throughout Friday, with the Met Office warning of difficult driving conditions. The Tube network has also suffered severe delays on three major lines this morning, adding to the strain on the roads as more people travel by car.
The Met Office has repeatedly urged drivers to take care in the wet and windy conditions, warning that standing water and debris can make even familiar roads treacherous.
If you are caught in the delays
Police are urging drivers to stay patient and avoid the closed section entirely rather than trying to thread through side roads that are already carrying diverted traffic. Satnavs can help, but on a day like this they may route everyone the same way — local knowledge is often kinder. Bus passengers using routes through the area should check live departure boards, as services may be diverted or delayed, and TfL’s journey planner will show the current picture.
Anyone who witnesses the crash and has dashcam footage is asked to report it to police in the usual way. Do not stop at the scene to film — it delays the response and puts you at risk.
Earlier incidents today
This is the latest in a series of road incidents across the capital and beyond on a difficult Friday for travel. A main road in Northumberland Park was shut both ways after a crash this morning, while a multi-vehicle crash near Clacket Lane services caused a full closure of the M25 near Godstone earlier in the day.
