Aldi confirms four new London supermarkets opening before Christmas

Shoppers in four corners of the capital will have a new budget supermarket on their doorstep in time for Christmas, after Aldi confirmed new stores in Orpington, Stepney Green, Hanworth and Willesden will all open before the festive season.

The discount chain says the four London branches form part of a wider rollout of almost 30 new or relocated stores across the UK over the next ten weeks, as it pushes ahead with its national expansion plans. London is taking four of the new branches, with the rest spread across the country.

Willesden was among the locations named in Aldi’s earlier autumn announcement, which we covered in September, while Orpington in the south-east, Stepney Green in the east end and Hanworth in the south-west are newly confirmed additions to the capital’s store map.

The timing is no accident. With household budgets under pressure in the run-up to Christmas, Aldi has pledged to keep cutting prices through the festive season, promising shoppers even greater value at the tills during the most expensive time of the year. From the big Christmas dinner shop to last-minute top-ups, the new branches will give local households a cheaper option close to home when they need it most.

Giles Hurley, chief executive of Aldi UK and Ireland, said the expansion is about making good food affordable for every family. He said the chain is cutting prices on everyday essentials and signing long-term deals with suppliers to increase home-grown production, while continuing to bring affordable groceries to more communities through its store opening programme.

“We’re working hard to make good food more affordable for every family – cutting prices on everyday essentials, signing long-term supplier agreements to help increase home-grown production, and continuing to bring affordable groceries to even more communities through our store opening programme.”

He added: “This is why more customers are buying more products at Aldi – our relentless focus on simple, everyday low prices and award-winning quality.”

The announcement follows Aldi’s annual trading update, which showed turnover up five per cent to a record £19bn for the year ending 31 December 2025. The chain now runs 1,092 stores across the UK.

Industry figures put Aldi’s share of the UK grocery market at 10.6 per cent, with growth driven by rising customer numbers and bigger basket sizes.

The retailer has been named Britain’s cheapest supermarket for five years in a row and says it remains the only major grocer whose prices are falling year on year. This year alone it has put £340m into price reductions across more than 1,000 products, including orange juice, butter, fresh meat and frozen fish.

The capital is not the only winner. Aldi said additional stores will open in Epsom, Ashford and Chatham before the end of the year.

For Londoners, the new branches mean a shorter trip for a cheaper weekly shop – and they will land just as families start stocking up for Christmas, a welcome boost in a city where the cost of living is felt keenly.

Each new branch also brings a lift for its neighbourhood, with store teams recruited locally and extra footfall for surrounding high streets. New supermarkets bring roles ranging from store assistants to managers, offering job opportunities close to home for local residents. The openings come as retailers staff up for the busiest trading period of the year – timely news for jobseekers, with 100,000 retail jobs on offer to young people in a new placements scheme.

The continued expansion underlines how firmly the discounters have established themselves in Britain’s grocery market, as shoppers increasingly split their weekly shop in search of value. With new sites continuing to be scouted across the capital and beyond, shoppers in more neighbourhoods could soon find a new Aldi on their doorstep. Those keen to be among the first through the doors should watch for confirmed opening dates in the coming weeks.
