Two men are being held at a London police station over a suspected terrorist plot targeting the Jewish community in the Manchester area, after a London-led counter-terrorism investigation resulted in their arrest in the north of England.
The men, both in their 30s, were arrested on Sunday on Newton Street in Manchester under Section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000. The arrests form part of an investigation by Counter Terrorism Policing London into a suspected plot targeting the Jewish community in Manchester.
The two men were subsequently taken to a London police station, where they remain in police custody. On Tuesday, officers obtained warrants of further detention for both men, allowing them to be held in custody until Sunday.
Searches at addresses in Epworth Street in Liverpool and Lancaster Road in Salford, carried out as part of the investigation, have now been completed.
Vicki Evans, deputy assistant commissioner and senior national coordinator for Counter Terrorism Policing, said: “Importantly, we do not believe there to be any ongoing threat to the public in relation to this matter, but as ever, we would ask that people remain vigilant and contact police with any concerns.”
