Four Sutton secondary schools have shared the highest score in a new league table, with each earning 37 out of a possible 40 marks.

The Telegraph compared secondary schools using a range of measures, with each school given an overall score out of 40. At the top of the Sutton ranking, four schools finished level on 37: Nonsuch High School for Girls, Wallington County Grammar School, Wallington High School for Girls and Wilson’s School.

All four were rated “Very good”. Nonsuch High School for Girls saw 93.1 per cent of pupils achieve grade 7 or higher in English and maths, with an Attainment 8 score of 81.8, and was ranked 53rd in the Telegraph’s top-school ranking. Wallington County Grammar School recorded 93.3 per cent at grade 7 or higher and an Attainment 8 score of 82, placing it 52nd nationally.

Wallington High School for Girls achieved 91.3 per cent at grade 7 or higher, with an Attainment 8 score of 80.3, and was ranked 55th nationally. Wilson’s School recorded the highest Attainment 8 score among the Sutton schools listed, at 86.8, with 96.9 per cent of pupils achieving grade 7 or higher in English and maths, and was ranked 48th nationally.

Five Sutton schools appeared in the Telegraph’s top-school rankings, led by Wilson’s in 48th place. The five are Wilson’s, Wallington County Grammar School, Nonsuch High School for Girls, Wallington High School for Girls and Sutton Grammar School, which was ranked 98th nationally.

How the table works

The overall score out of 40 brings together several different measures. Attainment 8 reflects pupils’ results across eight subjects at GCSE, while the grade 7 or higher figure shows the share of pupils reaching the higher grades in English and maths. Schools are also given a development score, which reflects pupil progress, and the table records the share of leavers going into education or work.

Just behind the leading four, Glenthorne High School and Sutton Grammar School followed on 36 out of 40. Glenthorne was rated “Very good”, with an Attainment 8 score of 63.6, some 42.8 per cent of pupils achieving grade 7 or higher in English and maths, and a development score rated “Well above average”. Sutton Grammar School was also rated “Very good”, with an Attainment 8 score of 82.6 and 88.1 per cent of pupils achieving grade 7 or higher.

Further down the Sutton ranking, Harris Academy Sutton was rated “Very good”, with an Attainment 8 score of 58.7, an “Excellent” development score, and 33 per cent of pupils achieving grade 7 or higher in English and maths. Greenshaw was rated “Very good”, recording an Attainment 8 score of 56.5, with 29.1 per cent of pupils at grade 7 or higher.

St Philomena’s Catholic High School for Girls came joint eighth with 32 out of 40. It was rated “Very good”, with an Attainment 8 score of 54.4 and a development score rated “Well above average”. Carshalton High School for Girls came joint tenth with 29 out of 40, rated “Good”, with an Attainment 8 score of 51.7 and a development score rated “Above average”.

Cheam High School was rated “Good”, with an Attainment 8 score of 53.1 and 21.9 per cent of pupils achieving grade 7 or higher in English and maths. The John Fisher School was rated “Good”, with an Attainment 8 score of 50.8, while 99.5 per cent of leavers went into education or work, the joint-highest figure among the Sutton schools listed. Overton Grange was rated “Good” and recorded an Attainment 8 score of 47.3, with a development score rated “Average” and 95.1 per cent of leavers going into education or work.

Carshalton Boys Sports College came 14th with 22 out of 40. It received an overall rating of “Fair” and an Attainment 8 score of 46.1, with 91.2 per cent of leavers going into education or work.

One school left out over a data problem

Oaks Park High School has not been included in the Sutton ranking due to an apparent issue with the data. Two separate Oaks Park High School entries appear in the Telegraph’s list, but both display data for the school in Ilford, Redbridge, rather than the Sutton school. An accurate score for Sutton’s Oaks Park High School could therefore not be established, and it has been excluded from the ranking.

School places and facilities remain a live issue for families across London. In Barnet, plans for a new sports complex at QE Boys have drawn objections from neighbours over the scale of the proposed building. Elsewhere in Sutton, five people escaped unharmed from an early-morning flat fire in North Cheam.
