Why Orpington is the Bromley town locals love most

Published at 3:02pm

When readers were asked to name their favourite part of Bromley, one answer kept coming up: Orpington. It is easy to see why once you spend an afternoon there. This south-east London town sits on the edge of the Kent countryside, and although it is firmly part of the capital, its centre has a distinctly suburban feel — calmer than central London, but far from sleepy.

The drive in sets the tone. Coming off the M25, the fields and woodland give way to greenery that continues into the town itself, and the pace seems to drop a notch as soon as you reach the high street. Orpington rewards a slow wander rather than a whistle-stop visit, and its best bits are the ones you have to step slightly off the main drag to find.

Priory Gardens, the quiet highlight

Step off the high street and up Church Hill, and the traffic hum soon fades. The entrance to Priory Gardens appears as a leafy opening on Old Priory Avenue, and the park inside is the sort of place that makes the whole trip worthwhile. Tucked away from the shops, it is full of quiet corners: low stone walls, stone archways, gentle tiers that lead you down through Italianate-style gardens, pergolas and paved walkways brightened with colourful planting.

The gardens are listed, and it is not hard to understand why they are so highly regarded. They opened as a public park in 1952 and sit alongside The Priory, a listed medieval building, so there is history here as well as beauty. Wander further down and you reach a large pond teeming with wildlife — and, beside it, Lopeto Café, with large windows giving views straight out over the water. It is an ideal excuse for a coffee with a view, and the pond alone is worth the detour.

Priory Gardens is the highlight of any visit to Orpington. These are the spaces that offer respite from the hustle of London living: somewhere to walk slowly, sit a while and forget the city for an hour.

A high street with room for independents

Back on the high street, the mix is familiar — chains, cafés, banks, barbers and charity shops — with the Walnuts Shopping Centre and Nugent Shopping Park nearby adding more choice. The street itself is rather pretty, with some added charm from its older buildings, and the overall impression is of a high street holding up better than many, with a relatively wide range of shops and services.

Among the independents, one stop stands out. The Orpington Café & Record Store is a family-run business that has won a Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Award for five years running. Head chef Finlay Cussen, who was born and raised in Orpington, joined the business in 2022 with a mission to use local produce. The space is split between dining at the front and records at the back, and it has been made to feel inviting and relaxed, much like a living room, with plump chairs and booths adding to the sense of comfort.

The menu is extensive, but the Tuscan bean soup is the dish that catches the eye — rustic and hearty, the sort of thing that suits an autumn afternoon after a walk through the gardens. It is a small detail, but it sums up what Orpington does well: local, unhurried and comfortable, without trying too hard.

That is really the town’s appeal. Orpington has a certain aura about it — a slower pace than you might expect, but not at all sleepy. Perhaps its proximity to Kent has preserved it in a halfway existence between London liveliness and suburban bliss. Whether you come for the gardens, the café or simply a wander around a high street that still feels like a town centre, it is a corner of Bromley that earns its fans. Anyone planning a weekend trip by rail should check the latest service information first, as weekend works can affect trains across Bromley.
