Around 150 people have rallied to save Beckenham’s Odeon cinema as the fight to protect the much-loved venue intensifies ahead of its closure.
Campaigners gathered on Saturday, October 10, to show their support for keeping the High Street cinema open, with more than 11,500 people now backing the campaign.
The cinema is due to close for good on November 29, leaving campaigners with just weeks to fight for its future. A petition calling for the Odeon to be saved from being turned into a church has now reached 11,544 signatures.
Residents have described the potential loss as “heartbreaking”. Zoe Brooks, who has a 12-year-old daughter, said: “I can book her ticket; she can walk there with her friend, and I know that she’s five minutes away.”
“If we want our young people to feel engaged and away from the harmful effects of social media and little screens, not big screens, then this is a safe space for them to go that’s close to home.”
The rally marks the latest stage of a community campaign that has seen more than 11,500 people throw their weight behind keeping the cinema.
London Streets has been covering Archway’s new record store and the Masons Arms pub this week.
