Passengers travelling with Southern this weekend face a patchwork of cancellations, shortened routes and rail-replacement buses, as engineering works take several key lines out of full action across London, Surrey and Sussex on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 October.
The works hit four separate routes over the two days, with some lines losing trains entirely for long stretches and others running only part of the way. Passengers are being urged to check their journeys before setting off and to allow plenty of extra time.
It comes during a wider weekend of engineering work across the capital — our round-up of the London Tube and rail closures to know this Saturday and Sunday has the full picture. Here is the full rundown of the Southern changes and how to get around them.
Reigate trains cut back to Redhill
From the end of Saturday’s service, at around 1am on Sunday morning, trains between London Victoria and Reigate will run only as far as Redhill. Anyone travelling to or from Reigate will need to change at Redhill for alternative services, and the shortened route stays in place for the whole of Sunday.
If you are heading to Reigate on Sunday, build the change into your plans — Redhill is a busy interchange and connections may not line up neatly with your usual departure.
Buses replace early Brighton trains
On the busy coastal route, buses will replace trains between Three Bridges and Brighton until around 7.15am on Sunday. The replacement buses take longer than the trains they stand in for, so anyone making an early start for the coast should leave earlier than normal.
Trains should be back on the rails after around 7.15am, but it is worth checking live departures before you travel in case the works overrun.
Portsmouth line on buses all weekend
The disruption is longest-lasting on the Portsmouth route, where buses will replace Southern trains between Havant and Portsmouth & Southsea and Portsmouth Harbour throughout the entire weekend.
Passengers will be able to use their tickets on South Western Railway bus services at no extra cost, so there is no need to buy a second ticket — just show your Southern ticket when you board.
Watford route closed in two spells
Engineering work between Shepherds Bush and Watford Junction will close some lines, with no Southern trains running between the two stations from 7.45pm on Saturday until 1pm on Sunday. After a brief afternoon window of service, trains will be suspended again from 8pm on Sunday until the end of the day.
During the closures, Southern tickets will be accepted on alternative Southern services between Clapham Junction and London Victoria at no extra cost, and on London Northwestern Railway services between London Euston and Watford Junction — giving west London passengers two fallback options.
For anyone travelling in the capital this weekend, the Southern works sit alongside a Jubilee line closure hitting O2 journeys and closures on the Central, Piccadilly and Elizabeth lines, so cross-London journeys could take noticeably longer than usual.
How to beat the disruption
A little planning goes a long way when the timetable is rewritten. If your normal route is affected, map out an alternative the night before: Portsmouth passengers can stay on the replacement buses without paying extra, Brighton-bound travellers should aim to travel after the early-morning works finish, and anyone using the Watford corridor can head for London Euston and pick up a London Northwestern Railway service instead.
Engineering timetables can also shift at short notice, so check live departure boards on the day — National Rail Enquiries, the Southern website and app, and the screens at stations all carry real-time information. Station staff can advise on the quickest alternative if your train is cancelled.
And if the works leave you arriving 15 minutes or more later than planned, you may be able to claim compensation through Southern’s Delay Repay scheme. Keep hold of your ticket and make a note of the services you actually used — claims are made online after you travel.
