Arrest made in Woolwich after injured man found on Herbert Road

A man has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm after police found an injured man on a residential street in Woolwich.

Officers came across the man, who is in his 20s, on Herbert Road at around 5.45pm on Saturday. They gave him first aid at the scene before he was taken to hospital by the London Ambulance Service, where he was treated for injuries described as non-life-changing.

An air ambulance was also scrambled to the area on Saturday evening, landing near the scene as emergency crews treated the casualty, as we reported earlier today. The helicopter was seen touching down close to Herbert Road while paramedics worked on the injured man.

The Metropolitan Police has now confirmed that a 24-year-old man was arrested on Sunday on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon. He remains in police custody.

News of the air ambulance landing spread quickly on social media on Saturday evening, with residents reporting a large emergency services presence around Herbert Road while crews worked at the scene. Part of the road was cordoned off while emergency services dealt with the incident.

A spokesperson for the Met said: “On Sunday, 27 September, officers arrested a 24-year-old man on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon. He remains in police custody.”

An arrest is not a charge. Police have not named the arrested man, and he remains in custody while detectives continue their enquiries.

Grievous bodily harm is among the most serious violent offences under English law. The Met has not said where the arrest took place, nor whether the arrested man was known to the injured man.

Detectives will also want to hear from anyone who may have captured footage on a doorbell camera or dashcam while in the area on Saturday evening.

Herbert Road is a residential street in Plumstead, a short distance from Woolwich town centre in the Royal Borough of Greenwich. The arrest comes during a busy weekend for the force in the capital, following the death of a cyclist in North Pole Road, North Kensington, in a collision now being treated as murder.
