Fire on Whitechapel Road disrupts traffic on the A11

This is a developing story. This article was first published on Friday 2 October 2026 and will be updated as the situation develops.

Commuters travelling through east London faced a difficult start to the day on Friday after the Whitechapel Road fire forced the partial closure of the A11 during the busy morning rush.

The blaze broke out on the northbound carriageway of the A11 Whitechapel Road between Vallance Road and Whitechapel Station. Several fire engines are at the scene, where crews are working to deal with the incident.

The road is partially blocked, with traffic moving slowly through the area. One lane remains open in each direction, but the emergency response is causing significant delays, and motorists have been warned to expect hold-ups until the incident is resolved.

The fire was first reported on Friday morning, and by around 10.30am crews were still at work on Whitechapel Road, with the northbound carriageway remaining partially blocked near Whitechapel Station.

No details have yet been confirmed about the cause of the fire or the extent of any damage to the building involved. The incident is ongoing, and this article will be updated when the road reopens or further information is released.

What we know so far: the fire involves a building on Whitechapel Road; the northbound A11 is partially blocked between Vallance Road and Whitechapel Station; several fire engines are in attendance; one lane remains open in each direction; and drivers should expect delays while crews finish their work.

The partial closure comes at one of the busiest times of the day for the A11, a key route linking the City with east London. Bus services using Whitechapel Road are also likely to be caught up in the disruption, and surrounding streets are taking extra traffic as drivers look for a way around the blockage.

Whitechapel Road is one of east London’s busiest thoroughfares, carrying traffic between Aldgate and Mile End past the area’s famous market. The affected stretch runs through the heart of Whitechapel, close to the station and the Royal London Hospital, and any restriction here quickly sends ripples through the surrounding road network.

It has been a difficult morning for London’s roads and railways. Traffic was brought to a halt on the M25 near junction 27 earlier today after a car overturned, while three Tube lines are suffering severe delays following a fault at Gloucester Road. Urgent repair works at Brixton station have also hit Victoria line services.

Alternative routes for drivers

Drivers who would normally use the A11 through Whitechapel should avoid the area until the road fully reopens. Those heading east from the City can use Commercial Street (A1203) to the south or Bethnal Green Road to the north as alternatives, rejoining their onward journey once clear of the disruption. Allow plenty of extra time and check live traffic updates before setting off.

What to do if you reach a road closure

If you come across the closure, do not attempt to drive through any coned-off or cordoned section of road, and follow any signed diversions. Keep junctions clear so traffic can keep moving, and leave plenty of room for emergency vehicles to work. If you are travelling by bus, listen out for announcements from the driver about diverted routes.

People living or working close to the scene may see smoke and notice a strong smell in the air. Anyone affected is advised to keep windows and doors closed as a precaution and to follow any instructions issued by emergency services at the scene.

Rail may prove quicker than the road. Whitechapel station sits right beside the affected stretch and is served by District, Hammersmith & City, Elizabeth line and London Overground services, offering an alternative for journeys into central London.
