Traffic is facing major disruption across Croydon this afternoon after a crash on the A212 Wellesley Road.
The road is blocked in both directions between Station Road and Woburn Road, with congestion building around the Whitgift Centre and back towards Newgate and St James’s Road.
What we know
Emergency services were called to the crash on Wellesley Road, one of Croydon’s main arterial routes, on Tuesday afternoon (October 14).
The A212 is shut in both directions between Station Road and Woburn Road — a stretch that runs through the heart of central Croydon, close to the Whitgift Centre shopping area.
Several bus routes are on diversion while the incident is dealt with, and drivers are being advised to avoid the area.
Impact on journeys
Wellesley Road is a key route through Croydon town centre, carrying traffic between central Croydon and the wider borough. The A212 runs from the town centre south through some of Croydon’s busiest junctions, and a full closure in both directions during the afternoon will have knock-on effects across the local road network.
Congestion is already reported around the Whitgift Centre, one of south London’s busiest shopping destinations, and tailbacks are stretching towards Newgate and St James’s Road.
Bus passengers should check with TfL before travelling, as several routes are being diverted around the closure. The diversions are likely to add significant time to journeys through the town centre.
Why Wellesley Road matters
Wellesley Road sits at the centre of Croydon’s road network. It connects the town centre with residential areas to the south and feeds traffic towards the A23 and the wider south London road system.
The stretch between Station Road and Woburn Road passes some of Croydon’s most congested junctions. Even a partial restriction here causes rapid build-up, because there are few easy alternative routes for through traffic — drivers are forced onto already-busy surrounding streets.
Croydon town centre is also undergoing long-term regeneration work, which has at times added to traffic pressure on key routes. Any incident on Wellesley Road lands on a network that is already running close to capacity during peak periods.
Alternative routes
Drivers heading through central Croydon should consider alternative routes and allow extra time. The tram network and rail services from East Croydon station remain unaffected and offer the quickest way in and out of the town centre.
London Trams serve central Croydon with frequent services, while East Croydon station offers fast connections to London Bridge, Victoria and Gatwick Airport.
For live traffic updates, drivers can check TfL’s status updates before setting off.
What happens next
Police will need to clear the scene and make the road safe before Wellesley Road can reopen. The length of the closure will depend on the severity of the crash and the recovery operation.
If the crash involves serious injuries, the road may remain closed for several hours while collision investigators examine the scene — a standard procedure that prioritises evidence gathering over traffic flow.
Once the carriageway is clear, TfL will work to restore normal bus services, though residual delays are likely as diverted routes return to their normal paths and timetables recover.
Evening rush hour warning
With the closure in place during the afternoon, there is a real risk of significant disruption spilling into the evening rush hour. Commuters leaving central Croydon between 5pm and 7pm should check traffic conditions before travelling and consider rail or tram alternatives.
East Croydon’s rail connections to central London run frequently throughout the evening peak, and London Trams offer a reliable alternative for journeys within the borough.
We will continue to update this live blog as more information becomes available, including when the road reopens and normal bus services resume.
