A man has died following a serious crash in north London, with a major road through Islington closed for hours as emergency services dealt with the incident on Friday morning. The collision happened on Tollington Road shortly before midday.
Crews were called to Tollington Road at 11.31am after receiving reports of a road traffic collision. Despite the best efforts of paramedics at the scene, the man was pronounced dead a short time later.
The incident happened on a busy stretch of the A503 close to Holloway Road, an area used by large numbers of commuters travelling between Holloway and Finsbury Park.
Ambulance crews scrambled to the scene
The London Ambulance Service sent an ambulance crew, paramedics in fast response cars and incident response officers to Tollington Road after the alarm was raised.
A spokesperson for the service said: “We were called at 11.31am today (25 September) to reports of a road traffic collision on Tollington Road, Islington. We sent an ambulance crew, paramedics in fast response cars, and incident response officers to the scene. Despite the efforts to save his life, a man sadly died at the scene.”
The service has not released any further details about the man.
A503 shut with long delays around Holloway
The crash closed the A503 Tollington Road between Annette Road and Hertslet Road, with traffic data showing significant congestion across the surrounding area. Queues stretched back towards Finsbury Park via Blackstock Road and Stroud Green Road as drivers looked for alternative routes.
The closure remained in place into the afternoon, with motorists warned to expect long delays on surrounding routes while the road stayed shut.
London Streets reported earlier on Friday that the closure of the key route through Holloway was causing major delays for drivers and bus passengers, with services diverted around the scene. Commuters were urged to allow extra time for their journeys.
It was not the only serious crash disrupting the capital’s roads. The A2 was shut at Old Kent Road after a separate collision that saw buses diverted, while a man died following another collision on Curnick’s Lane in West Norwood.
