Update — Friday, 2 October 2026: Three teenagers have been arrested in connection with the Charlton Church Lane stabbing. A 17-year-old boy and two 18-year-old men were arrested in Eltham on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent. The two 18-year-olds were additionally detained on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon and theft of a motor vehicle.

A 19-year-old is fighting for his life in hospital after a knife attack on a residential street in Charlton late last night.

Police were called to Charlton Church Lane at 8.50pm on Tuesday, September 30, after reports of a stabbing near the turn with Woolwich Road in the south-east London neighbourhood.

The teenager was treated at the roadside before being rushed to a major trauma centre, where he remains in a critical condition.

Three suspects were arrested hours later in nearby Eltham. A 17-year-old boy and two 18-year-old men were held on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent. The two 18-year-olds were additionally detained on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon and theft of a motor vehicle.

A spokesperson for the London Ambulance Service said crews were alerted at 8.51pm to reports of a stabbing on Woolwich Road in Charlton, SE7.

“We sent an ambulance crew, an incident response officer and dispatched a trauma team in a car from London’s Air Ambulance,” the spokesperson said.

“The first paramedic arrived in around five minutes. We treated a patient at the scene and took him to a major trauma centre as a priority.”

London’s Air Ambulance is a charity that works alongside the London Ambulance Service, sending advanced trauma teams to the capital’s most seriously injured patients. Its doctors and paramedics bring hospital-level equipment to the roadside, allowing life-saving treatment to begin within minutes of a 999 call.

Charlton Church Lane is a residential road in the Royal Borough of Greenwich, running close to Charlton Park and a short walk from The Valley, the home of Charlton Athletic. The lane links Charlton village with Woolwich Road in a largely residential part of the borough, and the attack happened near the junction between the two.

Detectives from the Metropolitan Police are leading the investigation, and officers are expected to maintain a visible presence in the area while enquiries continue. No further details about the victim have been released at this stage.

How the night unfolded

How you can help the investigation

Detectives are likely to want to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time. Dashcam or doorbell footage from Charlton Church Lane or Woolwich Road between 8.30pm and 9.30pm on September 30 could prove vital to the enquiry.

Witnesses can contact the Metropolitan Police on 101, or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Grievous bodily harm with intent is one of the most serious violent offences under English law, carrying a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. Anyone charged would be expected to appear in court, where judges have handed down significant custodial terms in other recent London cases.

Knife crime remains a persistent concern across the capital. Police regularly urge Londoners to report anything suspicious and to seek help if they fear someone they know may be carrying a weapon.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
