A 24-year-old cyclist has died after a suspected hit-and-run crash involving a moped on North Pole Road in North Kensington in the early hours of Friday morning, 25 September.
Officers were called to the west London street at around 1.20am, where they found a seriously injured man. Emergency services attended, but he could not be saved, and he was pronounced dead at the scene, the Metropolitan Police said.
The man, who was 24, had been riding an e-bike when the collision happened, detectives said.
Moped rider fled the scene
CCTV enquiries suggest the e-bike rider was involved in a collision with a moped at around 1.14am, just minutes before the alarm was raised. The collision is being treated as a suspected hit-and-run.
The moped driver did not stop at the scene, according to police. Officers said the rider left before emergency services arrived, and detectives are now working to trace them.
A police cordon remained in place on North Pole Road on Friday as officers continued their enquiries at the scene. The road runs through North Kensington in west London.
Earlier on Friday, London Streets reported that North Pole Road had been closed overnight while detectives investigated the fatal collision.
“Full investigation” launched
The North Pole Road hit-and-run is being investigated by detectives from Hammersmith and Fulham CID, who are working to establish the full circumstances of the collision.
Detective Chief Inspector Phil Wilkins said: “Our thoughts are with the man’s family at what is a very difficult time.”
“We have launched a full investigation and are working hard to get answers and trace the moped driver,” he said.
DCI Wilkins said officers were determined to get answers for the man’s family. Detectives have been making CCTV enquiries in the area as part of the investigation, piecing together the moments leading up to the collision, and are also reviewing footage from the surrounding streets.
Police appeal for witnesses
Officers are urging anyone who was in the area at the time and may have seen the e-bike or the moped to get in touch with them as soon as possible.
Anyone who was driving, cycling or walking through the area in the early hours of Friday is asked to come forward. Police said they were particularly keen to trace anyone who saw either vehicle around the time of the collision.
“If you have any information that could help, please come forward,” DCI Wilkins added.
