Multiple buses collide outside Morden station as witness describes ‘bomb-like’ bang

Published at 10:52pm

Multiple buses have collided in front of Morden Underground Station, leaving vehicles badly damaged and glass and sand scattered across the road.

The collision happened on Tuesday evening outside the station. Photographs from the scene show shattered windscreens and crumpled front panels on the vehicles involved.

One bus suffered major damage to its front left corner, while another sustained extensive cracks across its lower windscreen. A worker in high-visibility clothing was seen inspecting one of the damaged buses at the scene.

The circumstances of the collision remain unclear. A shopkeeper nearby described a loud impact, saying: “There was a huge sound. I think the buses were trying to reverse and then they smashed into each other.”

“Think there were 5 or 6 buses but when it happened it sounded like a bomb had gone off,” the shopkeeper added. That was the witness’s impression of how many buses were in the area; it has not been confirmed how many vehicles were directly involved in the collision.

Although the road has since been cleared, sand and broken glass remain scattered along it.

Transport for London has been approached for comment. It is not yet known if anyone was injured in the collision.

The station sits on London Road, where a gas leak at a busy junction brought SGN engineers out last month. The incident also comes days after parents in Sutton demanded action over the 213 bus leaving schoolchildren behind.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
