105 arrested as Essex and Met officers sweep border roads in two-week crackdown

Published at 1:00pm

More than 100 people have been arrested after a two-week roads policing operation across Essex that stretched right up to the London border, with officers seizing weapons, drugs and stolen vehicles along the way.

Essex Police stopped 428 vehicles during the joint operation, which ran across Brentwood, Harlow, Chelmsford, Basildon, Thurrock and Grays. In total, 105 people were arrested — a figure that covers everything from drug driving to immigration offences.

The largest single group was drug drivers. Officers arrested 34 people on suspicion of drug driving, after spotting signs of suspected cocaine and cannabis use. A further six people were arrested for drink driving, and 20 more were detained for offences including driving without a licence, without insurance, or while disqualified.

Working alongside the Metropolitan Police on the Essex-London border produced another 16 arrests, while 93 immigration checks led to 29 arrests for offences including illegal entry to the UK and breaches of deportation orders. Added together, those groups account for all 105 arrests.

What officers seized

The haul was substantial. Officers seized more than three kilograms of cannabis, £3,000 in cash, seven weapons, and 14 stolen vehicles along with fraudulent documents. They also took 18 cars, five motorbikes and three e-bikes, and issued 103 tickets for traffic offences.

Sergeant Dean Young, who led the Essex operation, said: “If you’re getting behind the wheel when you shouldn’t be, dealing drugs, working illegally or exploiting those that do, our team will track you down.”

The figures underline how much of this kind of enforcement now happens on the roads rather than at fixed locations. Stopping hundreds of vehicles over a fortnight gives officers a way to pick up offences — from disqualified drivers to stolen cars — that would otherwise pass unnoticed, and the joint deployment with the Met shows how the work crosses the county boundary into London.

Why the border matters

The Essex-London border is a natural focus for this sort of operation. Brentwood and Thurrock sit on the main routes in and out of the capital, and Grays and Basildon are close enough to London that vehicles, and the people in them, move between the two areas constantly. That is why the joint deployment with Metropolitan Police officers was built into the operation, producing 16 arrests on the border itself.

It is also worth noting what the figures do not show. The force has not said how many of the 105 arrested have been charged, bailed or released, so arrests here should not be read as convictions. The operation was an enforcement sweep, and the next steps for those arrested will be decided case by case.

For drivers, the message is straightforward: the checks covered licence, insurance and disqualification as well as drink and drugs, and the 103 traffic tickets show officers were not only looking for the most serious offences. Anyone driving without the right documents, or after drinking or taking drugs, was exactly who the operation was designed to catch.

Police have not said whether further joint operations along the border are planned, but the scale of this one — 428 vehicles stopped, 105 arrests, and seizures running from cannabis to stolen cars — suggests the approach is one they are likely to repeat.

For residents of the six towns covered, the operation will have been hard to miss. Roadside stops on this scale, with officers from two forces working together, are deliberately visible — both to catch offenders in the moment and to send a message to anyone considering driving without a licence, insurance or sobriety.

Elsewhere in London, police investigations continue into a shooting in Woolwich, where the victim remains in a critical condition, and a fight on Kensington Church Street that left a man in hospital more than two weeks ago. Meanwhile, drivers heading to Heathrow should note the M25 junction 15 closure has been postponed to next weekend.
