Greggs Clapham is serving its last customers today, as the bakery on Clapham High Street pulls down its shutters for the final time — bringing to an end a fixture of the south London thoroughfare that locals say has served the area for years.
The closure of the Greggs Clapham store was announced back in May, after the building’s owner was served a notice to shut the site, according to local outlet BestOfClapham.
Regulars have been sharing their disappointment in the run-up to the final day. One shopper described the news as a “sad state of affairs”, while others posting tributes said the store “will be missed” after years on the high street, with another calling its departure “a shame”.
There is some hope for loyal customers, however. Greggs has said the team is “actively looking for potential new sites nearby, with the hopes of staying in Clapham”, The Sun reports.
Until a new site is found, customers chasing their steak bakes and sausage rolls will need to travel — the nearest alternative is the Greggs in Stockwell, around a 15-minute walk away.
Greggs now runs around 2,700 branches across the country and recently overtook Costa to become Britain’s biggest coffee chain, with a long-term ambition of 3,500 stores. Last year it closed 56 bakeries but opened 87 new ones.
The departure is another blow for the borough’s high streets. The branch sits in the London Borough of Wandsworth, where the council is grappling with rising costs and looking for savings across services including its libraries. Elsewhere in the borough, the council is considering spending £450,000 to move a Putney pedestrian crossing it only built in 2024.
