Tyrease Barnes charged over alleged Green Lanes shooting

Published at 11:24am

A 27-year-old man has been charged with a string of offences after a firearm was discharged during a daytime altercation in north London. Tyrease Barnes, of Warwick Gardens in Tottenham, is accused of affray, possession of a controlled drug and threatening a person with a bladed article following the alleged incident in the Green Lanes area of Haringey.

The charges relate to an incident involving two men in which a gun was fired on Pemberton Road in Hornsey at around 11am on Tuesday, 29 September. No injuries were reported, police said.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: “A 27-year-old man has been charged with multiple offences following an altercation in Green Lanes.”

Barnes appeared at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 1 October, and was remanded in custody. He is due to appear at Wood Green Crown Court on 29 October.

It is important to be clear about what a charge means at this stage. The allegations against Mr Barnes have not been tested in court and no plea has been reported. In English law a charge is a formal accusation, not a finding of guilt — only a trial can determine whether the allegations are proven. Because the case is now active before the courts, the law also places strict limits on what can be published about it beyond fair, accurate reports of the proceedings.

The three charges announced by the Met do not include a firearms offence, even though officers say a gun was discharged during the incident. Detectives say no other arrests have been made and their enquiries are continuing.

The case follows gunfire being reported on Green Lanes earlier in the week. As London Streets reported on Tuesday, bullet casings were found on the road after shots were fired in broad daylight, and the Met’s Trident team — the command that investigates gun crime across the capital — took on the inquiry. Trident was set up to tackle gun crime in London’s communities, and its detectives routinely lead investigations in which firearms are discharged on the capital’s streets.

Green Lanes is one of north London’s best-known thoroughfares, running from Newington Green up through Stoke Newington and Harringay towards Turnpike Lane, its pavements lined with restaurants, cafes and independent shops. Pemberton Road, where police say the weapon was fired, is a quieter residential street in Hornsey, a short distance west of the main road. The incident happened at around 11am on a weekday, at a time when the area would have been busy with shoppers and commuters.

Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses to the incident. Anyone who was in the area on Tuesday morning, or who saw or heard anything unusual, is urged to come forward. Information can be passed to the Metropolitan Police on 101, quoting the reference 2582/29SEP.

Remanded in custody, Barnes will remain held until he returns to court. At Wood Green Crown Court on 29 October the case is expected to be listed for a plea hearing, at which he will be asked how he pleads to each of the three charges. If he pleads not guilty, the court will fix a trial date; a guilty plea would move the case towards sentencing instead. Either way, the allegations will only be resolved in open court.

The charging decision comes as a number of serious cases work their way through London’s courts, including a fatal shooting in Newham in which three more men were charged, and a 2023 Tottenham murder case in which a suspect was charged after being extradited from Cyprus.

The Met says its investigation into the Green Lanes shooting remains ongoing. Further updates are expected as the case progresses through the courts.
