A Barbie Nutcracker pop-up is bringing a distinctly pink, family-friendly makeover to a grand Covent Garden landmark for October half-term.
The Royal Ballet has joined forces with Barbie for an interactive pop-up marking 25 years since Barbie in The Nutcracker first appeared on screen. Families are invited to drop in, take part in a trail, get creative at colouring tables and enjoy a first glimpse of a brand-new screen special, all without paying for a ticket to the main event.

When it is on and how to get in
The pop-up will be based in the Ground Floor Cafe at the Royal Opera House and will run from 28 October to 31 October. Doors open each day at 12pm.
The central pop-up is free and families do not need to book in advance for it. That drop-in arrangement should suit parents who prefer to keep half-term plans flexible, although popular times are likely to feel busy in a central London venue during school holidays.
What children can do when they arrive
On arrival, young visitors can pick up a dedicated passport and work their way around an activity trail, collecting stamps as they go. It gives the visit a clear sense of purpose for younger children, who can move at their own pace rather than watching a single timed performance.
A themed photo spot will be set up for family pictures, while colouring tables will be stocked with activity sheets and puzzles to keep hands busy. Children can also write down a hope or ambition as part of a postcard activity, then send it on its way via a special Nutcracker post-box.
The activities are aimed at children and their families, rather than at collectors or adult fans alone, so expect a relaxed, come-and-go atmosphere in the cafe space rather than a formal exhibition.
Free extras that do need booking
Alongside the drop-in trail, a separate programme of free sessions will run across the same period, and those places do need to be reserved ahead of time through the Royal Ballet and Opera website.
Families can choose from arts and crafts, dressing-up sessions and storytelling. There will also be early screenings of the new Barbie in The Nutcracker special, shown before its release on 1 November. If a screening is top of your list, it is worth checking availability early, as free bookable slots at major venues tend to go quickly during half-term.
Why the partnership is happening now
The Covent Garden residency forms part of a wider collaboration between the ballet company and the Barbie brand to mark the anniversary. The project stretches beyond the cafe, taking in filmed content, fashion tie-ins and live experiences for families.
It also lands well ahead of the stage ballet that inspires it. The Royal Ballet will bring The Nutcracker back to the Royal Opera House this winter season, with performances running from 3 December 2026 to 13 January 2027. For some younger visitors, the pop-up may be a first, low-pressure introduction to the story, the music and the building itself, long before they sit through a full-length production.
A limited retail range will arrive shortly before the pop-up opens, launching on 23 October. Inspired by the 2001 animated film, it will include everyday pieces such as T-shirts, socks, a baseball cap and tote bags, alongside smaller keepsakes including a mug, stickers, pin badges and a ballet-shoe keyring made specially for the collaboration. Seasonal additions will include a Christmas jumper and a Nutcracker-ticket tree decoration. The range will be sold in the Royal Ballet and Opera Shop in person and online.
Planning a half-term visit
The Royal Opera House sits on Bow Street in Covent Garden, WC2, right in the heart of theatreland. Covent Garden station, on the Piccadilly line, is the closest Tube stop and is only a short walk away. Leicester Square, served by the Piccadilly and Northern lines, and Holborn, on the Central and Piccadilly lines, are also within easy walking distance and can be a calmer option if Covent Garden is crowded.
Because the main pop-up opens at 12pm, families travelling from across London have time for a slower morning start and can aim to arrive close to opening on their chosen day. Build in extra time for the trail, the photo spot and any bookable session you have reserved, and consider bringing a light layer while you wait, as central London half-term queues often spill towards the entrance.
If you are making a full day of it, the visit pairs naturally with other family plans in the diary. Creative youngsters may also enjoy the final call for entries to the Winter Wonderland school art competition, while families looking for an outdoor October outing can explore the Halloween trail at Mayfield Lavender in Epsom. For many London families, half-term can quickly become expensive. A free, drop-in event in one of the capital’s best-known cultural buildings, built around dancing, dressing up and dreaming big, offers a welcome alternative — and a reason to head into Covent Garden even if you have never set foot inside the opera house before.
