Man hospitalised after early-morning street robbery in Croydon

Published at 4:12pm

A man has been taken to hospital after being robbed of his phone and cash in an early-morning street attack in Croydon.

Police were called to Surrey Street at 4.11am today following reports of a robbery. The victim, a man in his 20s, had his phone and money stolen.

What happened

The robbery took place in the early hours of Wednesday morning on Surrey Street, in the heart of Croydon town centre.

The man was taken to hospital for treatment. His injuries have been assessed as non-life-threatening and non-life-changing.

No arrests have been made at this stage, and police enquiries are ongoing.

Police appeal

Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to call police on 101, quoting reference 862/14OCT.

Information can also be passed anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Street robbery in London

Street robberies — typically involving the theft of phones, watches and cash — remain a persistent problem in parts of London. Croydon town centre, with its late-night economy and busy transport links, sees its share.

The early-morning timing of this attack is notable. At 4am, streets are quieter, fewer witnesses are around, and those still out — night workers, people heading home — can be more vulnerable.

Phones are the most commonly stolen item in street robberies. Their high resale value and the ease of snatching them from someone’s hand make them a prime target.

Staying safe

Police advise people to stay aware of their surroundings, particularly late at night and in the early hours. Keeping phones out of sight when not in use, sticking to well-lit routes, and avoiding walking alone through quiet areas can all reduce risk.

If you are targeted, police advice is clear: don’t resist. Property can be replaced; your safety comes first. Report the incident as soon as possible — the reference number and any descriptions you can give help detectives build a case.

What happens next

Detectives will be reviewing CCTV from the area around Surrey Street and speaking to any witnesses. Early-morning robberies in town centres often leave a trail of camera footage that can prove crucial.

Surrey Street is one of Croydon’s oldest streets, home to a historic street market that has operated for centuries. By day it’s a bustling shopping area; at 4am, it’s a very different place — quiet, dark, and largely empty.

That contrast is part of what makes early-morning town centre crime challenging to police. Resources are stretched, and the few people around are often those most at risk.

If a suspect is identified and there is sufficient evidence, the case could proceed to charging. Robbery is a serious offence that carries significant prison sentences on conviction.

Croydon’s ongoing challenge

Croydon has been working to improve safety in its town centre, with increased police patrols and CCTV coverage in key areas. But as this incident shows, determined offenders still find opportunities.

The Metropolitan Police’s robbery teams investigate hundreds of street robberies across London each month. Clear-up rates depend heavily on quick reporting, good descriptions and CCTV evidence — which is why appeals like this one matter.

The victim’s injuries, while not life-threatening, are a reminder that robbery is a violent crime. Having a phone snatched may sound minor until you consider the force involved and the fear it leaves behind.

Anyone who was in the Surrey Street area in the early hours of Wednesday morning and saw anything unusual is urged to come forward, even if it seemed insignificant at the time.
