Chelsea and Tottenham supporters heading to Stamford Bridge on Saturday are being warned of major disruption on the London Underground, with planned engineering works closing a large stretch of the District line and shutting Fulham Broadway station all day.
The Premier League London derby kicks off at 5.30pm on Saturday, October 24, with gates opening at 3.30pm. But anyone travelling by Tube will need to plan ahead: there will be no District line service between Edgware Road/Embankment and Ealing Broadway, Kensington (Olympia), Richmond and Wimbledon on both Saturday and Sunday, while Fulham Broadway station — the closest stop to the ground — is closed all day Saturday.
What is affected
The District line closure covers the entire western end of the line and the Edgware Road branch, including the stretch down to Wimbledon that serves the area around Stamford Bridge. The works are part of TfL’s planned engineering programme for the weekend of October 24–25.
The Circle line is also affected, with no service between Edgware Road and Aldgate (via Victoria) on Saturday and Sunday. And from 7.30pm on Saturday, the Mildmay line will have no service between Shepherd’s Bush and Willesden Junction, with a reduced service between Shepherd’s Bush and Clapham Junction.
How to get to the Bridge
Chelsea’s official travel guidance recommends that where possible, supporters use the Piccadilly line to and from Earl’s Court and complete the journey on foot or by bus from there — the walk to the stadium takes around 25 minutes.
A replacement bus service, the DL5, will run from Earl’s Court to West Brompton and Fulham Broadway. Spurs’ official away-fan information also highlights the Mildmay line: Imperial Wharf and West Brompton stations are each within a 15-minute walk of the ground — though fans should note the post-match Mildmay disruption from 7.30pm.
Supporters travelling on the Elizabeth line to Paddington can take the number 27 bus to Hammersmith before switching to the 211, which stops around a five-minute walk from the stadium.
A busy weekend on the network
The match travel chaos comes during a difficult few days for London’s transport. The M25 at junction 15 closes this weekend between the M4 slip roads, affecting drivers heading to Heathrow, while London Trams face the start of a 13-day closure on three East Croydon branches from Saturday. Storm Austen is also expected to bring disruption on Friday as the first named storm of the season moves in.
Fans on both sides are advised to check TfL’s journey planner before setting off, allow considerably more time than usual, and keep an eye on real-time service updates on matchday. Kick-off is at 5.30pm — but with the western District line out of action, getting to the Bridge on time will take planning.
