Police have launched an investigation after the front window of a prayer centre in Stratford was smashed on Friday evening.
Officers were called to the Hasanah Centre in Stratford at around 10.30pm on Friday after reports that the building had been vandalised. The centre’s front-facing window was shattered in the incident.
The Metropolitan Police said an investigation has been launched after damage was caused to the front window of a mosque in Stratford in the early hours of Saturday, 31 October. No arrests have been made at this stage.
“Although no arrests have been made at this stage, we are committed to tackling hate crime and have officers working at pace to build a picture of the incident and locate those responsible,” a spokesperson for the force said.
There have been no reports of anyone being injured. Police have not said whether the incident is being treated as a hate crime, or what, if anything, was used to break the window.
The attack drew a swift response from local representatives. Stratford and Bow MP Uma Kumaran described the incident as “concerning” in a joint statement with Newham mayor Forhad Hussain.
“We are aware of a concerning incident at Hasanah Centre Stratford. We are following the matter closely and are in touch with Newham Met Police to stay updated regarding the situation,” the statement said.
Community group Newham Muslims called the attack “alarming”, saying the building’s front-facing window had been shattered. “A mosque in Stratford has had its window smashed. Attacks on places of worship must never be normalised,” the group said.
Detectives are now working to establish exactly what happened and who was responsible.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Metropolitan Police on 101.
