The Metropolitan Police has corrected key details of the stabbing incident on Taunton Way in Stanmore on Tuesday, October 27, revising almost every central fact it first supplied about what happened in the early hours.
Officers were in fact called at 4.29am, the force has now said — not 5.46am, as it initially told the press. The man taken to hospital with stab wounds was aged in his 20s, not 45 as first stated. And the second injured person was a 17-year-old girl who suffered injuries earlier in the evening — not a woman in her 30s taken to hospital after being allegedly assaulted, as earlier reports based on the Met’s information had said.
The man’s injuries are neither life-threatening nor life-changing, and he has since been released from hospital.
What changed
The scale of the revision is unusual. Set against what was first reported, the corrected account reads very differently:
- Time police were called: first given as 5.46am; now corrected to 4.29am.
- Age of the man taken to hospital: first given as 45; now corrected to a man in his 20s.
- Second injured person: first described as a woman in her 30s taken to hospital after being allegedly assaulted; now corrected to a 17-year-old girl who suffered injuries earlier in the evening.
- Man’s condition: first reported as stab wounds with no condition given; now confirmed as neither life-threatening nor life-changing, and he has been released from hospital.
It is not clear why the force at first described the teenager as a woman in her 30s, or what happened earlier in the evening. The Metropolitan Police has been approached with further questions about the updated details.
What has not changed
Some elements of the case remain as first reported. A 45-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm on Tuesday, October 27, but has since been released on bail pending further enquiries. He has not been charged, and must not be identified as guilty of any offence.
The London Ambulance Service was called at 4.24am. A trauma team from London’s Air Ambulance also arrived by car. A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We treated a patient at the scene and took him to a major trauma centre as a priority.”
What bail pending enquiries means
Being released on bail pending further enquiries means the arrested man has been freed while the investigation continues, with conditions he must observe, but no charge has yet been brought. It is a routine stage in an investigation, not an outcome: officers can continue to gather evidence, take statements and review material, and a decision on whether to charge is made later. Anyone with information that could help the investigation is asked to contact police on 101, quoting CAD 766/27Oct.
The corrections matter beyond this one case. Early police accounts shape how an incident is understood by the public, and when the age of a victim, the time of a call and even the identity of a second injured person all change, it is a reminder that first reports — including our own earlier coverage, which has now been corrected — should be treated as provisional until the force confirms its account. We have updated our original report on this incident to reflect the corrected details.
