Detectives hunting the killer of a man shot dead in an Enfield pub have named the person they urgently need to trace, as a second man was arrested over the murder.
Abreham Woldegiworgis, 35, is wanted in connection with the fatal shooting of Erdem Mustafa, whose life was taken at a pub on Hertford Road one week ago. Police have released his details and image and are asking anyone who recognises him to come forward straight away.
Woldegiworgis is an Ethiopian national with links to Enfield, Haringey and Brixton, detectives said. Anyone who sees him is urged not to approach him but to contact police immediately.
Officers believe he is the person pictured in the CCTV image released last week, but say he has since significantly altered his appearance. That change is one reason detectives have gone public with fresh details now: they want as many eyes as possible on the search, and they want the public to look beyond the older image.
The appeal comes after a 23-year-old man was arrested on Monday, 26 October on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder. He remains in police custody. He has not been named, and he has not been charged.
That distinction matters. The arrest and the manhunt are two separate strands of the same investigation: one man is in custody helping detectives with their enquiries, while Woldegiworgis is the man officers still need to find. Woldegiworgis himself has not been charged with any offence, and he has not been convicted of anything. Police are clear that they want to speak to him in connection with the incident.
Erdem Mustafa, 35, was murdered at a pub in Hertford Road, Enfield, at around 9.30pm on Monday, 19 October. Officers attended alongside the London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance, and he was treated for gunshot wounds, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Specialist officers are supporting his next of kin. Investigators believe the attack was targeted.
Chief Inspector Allam Bhangoo, who is leading the investigation, said: “We remain committed to securing justice for Erdem as our thoughts remain with his loved ones at this unimaginably hard time.”
He added: “While I am pleased my team have made an arrest, our work continues at pace to investigate the full circumstances around Erdem’s murder. We are now releasing the details and images of a man we urgently need to speak to in connection with the incident.”
“We are carrying out a number of enquiries to trace him but are also asking for the public’s help. If you recognise him or have any information on his whereabouts please come forward.”
Detectives are still appealing for wider information about the shooting itself, and not only about the wanted man’s whereabouts. Bhangoo said: “We are still appealing for anyone with wider information about the shooting, including any CCTV, doorbell, dashcam or mobile phone footage, to also contact us.”
That footage appeal is a reminder of how much of this case now rests on what people in and around Hertford Road may have recorded without realising its significance: a doorbell camera clip, a dashcam passing the pub, a phone video from the street. Any of it could help detectives piece together the movements around 9.30pm on 19 October.
The murder has already been covered in our earlier report, when Erdem Mustafa was named as the victim and detectives renewed their appeal. Today’s update moves the case forward on two fronts at once: an arrest in custody, and a named man the public is being asked to help find.
Anyone with information should contact police on 101, quoting CAD 7050/19OCT26, or contact the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 to remain anonymous. And the warning bears repeating: if you see Woldegiworgis, do not approach him. Call police immediately.
Detectives say their enquiries continue at pace, and further updates will follow as the investigation develops.
