Staged taxi crash draws night crowd to historic London pub as Netflix comedy films in the capital

Published at 5:00pm

A dramatic night shoot outside a historic Hoxton pub is believed to be for a new Netflix comedy starring Robert Webb, with onlookers watching a staged taxi crash unfold under the lights.

Filming appears to be under way on Marbles, a new project from Friday Night Dinner creator Robert Popper starring the Peep Show actor and comedian Kevin Eldon.

Residents living near The Stag on Orsman Road watched on Monday evening as the Grade II listed pub was covered in a black backdrop while a crash scene was filmed between a taxi and a lorry.

Onlookers also spotted a 70s orange Audi, as well as what appeared to be a black cab lodged in the back of a red lorry, with smashed glass scattered on the road.

According to Netflix, the plot of Marbles centres on a multi-generational dysfunctional family, following middle-aged couple Sam and Samantha — part of the “sandwich generation”, raising young children while caring for their ageing parents.

Timothy Spall, Alexandra Roach and Denise Welch have also been cast, with shooting for Marbles scheduled to start in London in autumn 2026.

The pub in Orsman Road is no stranger to starring roles in hit films and TV series. Built in 1936 for Truman’s Brewery, it was used to film scenes for the movie Legend, in which Tom Hardy played both Reggie and Ronnie Kray.

It also provided the backdrop as Richard Gadd’s character Donny walked to start a shift at the fictional pub The Heart in the global hit Baby Reindeer.

An earlier pub with the same name had stood on the site since at least 1856, with links to the nearby canal.

Hoxton and its surrounding streets have long been a favourite filming location for the capital’s production companies — and with Marbles due to shoot across London over the coming months, expect more night shoots to draw crowds of curious onlookers.

London’s entertainment scene is gearing up for a busy winter, and the capital’s galleries are filling up too.
