Drivers on the M25 faced a second morning of misery as another crash brought long delays and queueing traffic to the motorway near Upminster.
The incident, which happened during Tuesday morning’s rush hour, caused significant congestion on the busy orbital motorway — adding to the disruption already caused by an earlier crash near Cobham.
Long delays around Upminster
Traffic was queueing for miles as lanes were affected by the crash. National Highways warned drivers to expect delays and to consider alternative routes where possible.
The M25 is no stranger to morning chaos, but two separate incidents on the same morning is unusually disruptive — even by the motorway’s standards. Commuters travelling through east London and Essex bore the brunt of the delays.
What drivers should do
Motorists are advised to check live traffic updates before setting out. Those already on the road should allow plenty of extra time and follow diversion signs where in place.
National Highways typically works to clear incidents as quickly as possible, but with two crashes to deal with on Tuesday morning, recovery was always going to take time.
A morning to forget on the M25
Between the Cobham crash and the Upminster incident, Tuesday 20 October will go down as one of the M25’s more chaotic mornings. For the thousands of drivers caught in the queues, the advice remains the same: check before you travel, and pack your patience.
London Streets will update this story as more details emerge.
