Father and son take the helm at historic Plumstead pub

A father-and-son team are preparing to write the next chapter in the story of one of south-east London’s most historic pubs, as they take over the Fox & Hounds in Plumstead with ambitious plans for its future.

Roy and Taylor will officially begin their five-year tenancy at the pub on October 30, bringing with them years of combined experience spanning traditional local pubs and contemporary cocktail bars.

The pair say they want to blend classic pub entertainment with newer, more modern offerings — creating a welcoming space that appeals to everyone, from long-standing regulars to first-time visitors.

Their vision was outlined in a message shared with the local community, in which they described themselves as a father-and-son team with many years in the pub and bar industry, keen to mix things up on their new adventure.

While some of their plans are being kept under wraps for now, the new tenants have already announced their first events — and they are wasting no time getting started.

Their opening celebration will be a Halloween party on Saturday, October 31, featuring spooky cocktails, a spin-the-wheel activity and a selection of party games. It promises to be a lively introduction to the neighbourhood.

Just two days later, on Monday, November 2, the pub will host a pool competition starting at 8pm. The winner will take home a £50 prize, and local players are being encouraged to come along and show off their skills.

Live entertainment sits at the heart of their plans. Roy and Taylor are reaching out to the community in search of musicians and DJs interested in performing at the venue, with a particular focus on finding jazz artists for Sunday sessions.

The aim is to build a balanced programme that honours the pub’s traditional roots while adding fresh, exciting events to the calendar.

For Roy and Taylor, the Fox & Hounds represents both a business opportunity and a labour of love. Taking on a five-year tenancy is a significant commitment, and the pair say they are determined to make the pub a true community hub — a place where people of all ages feel at home.

Their background across both traditional pubs and cocktail bars gives them a broad perspective on what modern drinkers want. Expect classic cask ales and pub staples alongside more inventive drinks — a combination they hope will set the Fox & Hounds apart.

The Fox & Hounds, located at 57 Plumstead Common Road on the corner of Sandy Hill Road, has been a fixture of the community for more than 150 years, according to the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA).

The venue is well known for its pub games, including pool and darts, as well as showing televised sport. CAMRA also notes its involvement in local darts and cribbage leagues, and highlights the walled garden at the rear of the building — a secluded spot for drinkers in the warmer months.

The change of tenancy marks another chapter in the pub’s long history. Roy and Taylor say they want to build on its legacy while introducing new forms of entertainment and deeper community engagement.

To keep residents up to date, the pair have launched a new “Fox and Hounds Plumstead” Facebook page — separate from the pub’s previous account — where upcoming events and announcements will be posted regularly.

Locals are being encouraged to visit the pub, meet the new team, and find out more about what is in store.

The takeover comes as pubs across the capital enjoy something of a revival. In nearby Chislehurst, the historic Tigers Head has just been approved for a major revamp, while the legendary Hope & Anchor in Islington is searching for a new landlord to write its next chapter.

As the Fox & Hounds prepares to come under new management, excitement is building among Plumstead residents eager to see what the father-and-son duo will bring to the historic venue.

With a blend of old and new, the refreshed Fox & Hounds aims to become a vibrant gathering place for all generations — continuing its long tradition of welcoming locals and visitors alike.
