Oxford Street is about to get a spellbinding makeover. The UK’s largest official Harry Potter shop will open its doors on 4 November, and wizarding-inspired illuminations will join the street’s famous stars this Christmas, turning one of the capital’s best-known shopping destinations into a must-visit for fans of all ages.
The new store will be the biggest dedicated Harry Potter retail space in the country, giving visitors a brand-new West End destination just in time for the festive season. Its arrival forms part of a collaboration between the New West End Company and HBO Max, bringing a touch of the wizarding world to the heart of London’s shopping district.
Harry Potter-inspired illuminated displays will appear alongside Oxford Street’s famous stars this Christmas. The bespoke designs, created specially for the season, will give the street a distinctly Hogwarts-like feel after dark — a one-of-a-kind backdrop for an evening stroll or a spot of Christmas shopping.
“This will be a historic moment for Oxford Street,” said Dee Corsi, chief executive of the New West End Company.
The festive takeover has been timed to coincide with the launch of the new HBO Original television series “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone”, which begins this Christmas. Dominic McLaughlin will take on the role of Harry, alongside Arabella Stanton and Alastair Stout, with John Lithgow and Janet McTeer also among the cast. The series has been written and executive-produced by Francesca Gardiner.
Further details of the full Christmas programme, including the date of the official light switch-on, are expected to be revealed in the coming weeks.
What visitors can expect
Anyone heading to Oxford Street in the run-up to Christmas will find the street dressed in its most magical finery. The bespoke illuminated designs will sit alongside the famous stars that have become synonymous with the West End’s festive display, blending the magic of the wizarding world with the sparkle of the capital’s Christmas season.
The shop’s opening on 4 November means fans can plan a full day out: exploring the UK’s largest Harry Potter store before stepping outside to see the street glowing with wizarding-inspired lights. With Oxford Street stretching 1.5 miles from Marble Arch to Tottenham Court Road and home to more than 90 flagship stores, there is plenty to discover beyond the magic too.
Expect the area to draw big crowds once the displays are switched on, particularly at weekends and in the evenings. Visitors hoping to combine the lights with a trip to the new store may want to arrive earlier in the day, as both are likely to prove popular with families and fans travelling from across the country.
For the best experience, visit after dark when the illuminated displays are at their most striking. The lights are free to view, making the street one of the capital’s best-value festive outings — and with many shops opening late in the run-up to Christmas, you can easily combine the sightseeing with some serious present shopping.
